I just posted a tank in my log for 438 miles, 9.3 gal for 47 mpg.

HWY speeds ranged from 50 to 65 mph. Coasted with the engine off and in neutral when I could on nice down hills. Load drove the up hills and climbs. coasted up to lights in town with engine on or off depending on light timing. Shut the engine off when at long lights.

Did a oil and tranny fluid change a while back. The R-18 seems to be loving the M1 0w-20. And the 5MT is smooth as silk on the M1 5w-20.

I cant wait for spring and early summer. My best tank to date is @ 53 mpg. I hope to hit a 60 mpg tank this spring or early summer.

Here is a vid with excerpts of my 42 mile drive to work.

Here are some pics of a drive in the country I call my test loop.

Pics in here of importance are of the engine belly pan I made. Also when I discovered the power steering pump leak. The Civic seems to trap a ton of air under the hood. Not even the Accord has as much under hood turbulence.

I don't always hypermile. The tach does see redline every week. After all it is a Honda.

A R-18 driven right will get good MPG. If the car is sound and running right. EPA should be a no brainer.

The Civic is great!
The Ranger sucks! Its always drank gas like a F-150
The Accord is holding its own in the hands of the wife. But I can post 40 mpg tanks in it even with the wife driving on the tank.

Cheers.

Wow...good job! That's pretty amazing to be getting hybrid-like MPG

How are the two cars holding up? Has the dealer fixed all the assorted issues you've been having with them?

I wanted to ask xcel this, but it looks like you have a scangauge too; what kinds of [calculated] load values do you see on your scangauge on the Accord (or the civic) when doing various driving activities? Stuff like idling in gear, driving around, etc. I'm trying to get a running average of technical data like load, etc, into my technical thread.

Hi greg-ster

Its kinda funny you post up in this thread. Ive directed many folks to your thread concerning poor mpg you were getting in the Accord. And the resolution path you had to take to get something done. And the improvement you got not being a hypermiler. But a solid regular driver in a huge metro. :)

The R-18 in the Civic was built for mpg. Hondas only failing concerning the engine was they did not make it lean burn. I'm sure this was a marketing move. Lean burn in the R-18 would have all but ruined there hybrid effort. Its funny how a old lean burn VX Civic can lay waist to a current HCHII in the mpg category.

I guess I got the bad Honda's. Let me preface this by saying my dealer is great! The Tulsa dealers suck.

The Civic is still having problems.
The navi forgets how to do voice commands. The only way to get it to do them again is to clear its database/memory. Then that works great! Also about half the time I use it. The miles/time to destination lock up or a badly mis reported. Like you go 3 miles to have 1 mile drop off. Or drive 15 minute's to have one minute drop off. When it starts doing this it might not be right for 3 or 4 days. then set a destination and it works great!

I also noticed that I'm getting some noise from the front end when I pull into drive ways or make real sharp turns. I figure its a tie rod shooting craps.

Then this week the passenger side head light has deceided to wink. I appears there is a short somewhere. So my Civic might wink at you as we pass going down the road. This only happens on low beam. People wave and grin cause they think Ive wired it up to do that. LMAO.

The Accord.
All of its remain problems are cosmetic.
Honda declined to replace the top center panel of the dash. Said it was normal for it to look like a Belgium waffle. And insisted we did something to the dash air bag cover to make it sag to the point you could give a cat milk in it like a saucer.
Honda did agree to replace the engine hood. But I ended up declining it. Right at the time we were about to get resolution on the hood the wife wiped out the rear bumper cover. I figure its only a matter of time before she takes out the fenders and hood. So why waste a new hood. Not to mention the issue of not having a S/N on it if we trade or sell it. And she doesn't wreck it. My moneys on a wreck. :) It flex's with temp. changes. So it looks good during the fall and winter or when its cool. Looks like crap when its hot. And seeing the wife still hasn't gotten the bumper cover fixed. I'm not going to push the hood issue. I must say my dealer and Honda are being good about this. Even with my decline of repair right now. Its in the system as a warranty good will repair as long as we own the car.

I must say the engines are wonderful in both cars! And we are not plagued with rattles squeaks and other awkward noise's. The cloth in both our cars have held up very well. The plastics and all the touchy feely stuff is first class. They drive great. Run like bats out of hell when pushed. And almost always return EPA or high mpg in normal driving. Hypermiling just adds icing to the cake.

As for the ScanGuageI. Its a wonderful tool! The SGII is alot nicer device and looks far better than my ubber ugly piece of automotive history. :) I'm waiting on a revised SGII that will have data logging thru a usb port.

I myself don't use the LOD. I find it very misleading. Ive seen very high LOD numbers when I know there is no load on the engine or very low numbers when the tachs hovering around redline or pulling a hill. I do find the intake air and water temps helpful. A long with the MAP, Volts, GPH, MPG, LOOP. I also find the TPS reading to be a good one. I sometimes use MAP and TPS together. As one complements the other. I have had occasion to use the scan tool feature on my Ranger. It helped me out with some trouble shooting work.

Be good,,,, or bad at it. :)

Bump.

Very interesting results. 47mpg in a vehicle just about the size of a 5th Gen Accord. I wish they would bring the Civic 5 door over. Little to no chance of that now that the Fit is here though.

It's been very slow in this forum lately. I guess too many of us are lurking and not posting.

Wow, that's a really impressive # for MPG..
I get anywhere from 32-38 (36-38) if I'm real lucky..

I've never redlined the car more than 2-3 times in the last 35,000 miles, and drive on an avg of 70-75 MPH..

But then again my car is a 4spd auto..
