About to take the plunge on a rear wing for the Accord. Found one for sale from a Dealer (new) on eBay for 150.00 BIN shipped. But the bidding starts at $99, and no one has taken a bite in the two days its been up. I've seen sooo many accords with the wing spoiler, and I think it makes the 5th generation look much nicer. So anyone care to share if they think I can do it myself if I have a good drill, use the template, and buy a proper bit? I'll be really mad if it doesn't come out right I must say. Would it be worth it to just go to a body shop? Need opinions!
I've had estimates from 75-150 installed.

If you are old enough to drive, then it's high time you learnt to use a tape measure and a simple hand drill. Rocket science it aint!! :)
Put some masking tape over your work area first so that the drill tip wont wander around on the shiny boot top, and drill a small pilot hole first so you can verify it's correct before you use the final hole size drill..
If you use a template, check that it is correct for the spoiler you have to fit, if it is, once you have marked out both sides, check that the distances between the two are correct, and that they are parallel with the boot edges.. :)

in addition to the above, get a center punch..you can pick up an nice heavy duty one for under 10 bucks..(it basically puts a needle size ding in the metal, to give the drill bit a nice place to stay and not move)
..also make sure you get some sort of metal drilling pit...(carbide..is the only type of bit that comes off mind...)..also if you have a cordless drill, you might want to scrap it for this project and get a corded drill...you dont want this to take a couple days......you dont want to have to drill a hole..or a partial one and then have to stop and charge the battery again for another 4 hours
with all that said, i still would recommend going to a dealer to install...that way you can be sure its done correctly and youll never have any bad feelings that you did this wrong or something...most places (dealers mostly)..insure there work is correct
on a side note, may i suggest that you advertise on forums to switch trunks with someone that has same color with a spoiler?..ive seen lots of threads like that on that vtech... site..would cost you alot less time, money, and trouble...youll just have to find someone in your area, or close by

While that idea is a good one mnkyman, most of the hondas that I see around here have paint that is no where near in as nice condition as mine, with fade spots on the upward panels. Then the issue of the VIN, and the keyhole not matching up. Not sure if all that is worth the hassle/look of being previously damaged either. For an OEM spoiler that for some awkward reason still retails for 500 at all 3 of my lcoal dealers, this is practically a steal. I think I'm gonna go ahead and buy it. But I'll wait and see what the bidding looks like for the next day or two.
Thanks guys.

This would normaly be an excellant idea, and is standard practice, but ... In this case, unless you can get behind the spot you intend to punch, and hold something metalic and heavy against the site of the proposed blow of the punch, and you probably can't due to the double skin, then you run a high risk of causing a dent that may extend beyong the area covered by the spoiler.. :paranoid:

The self installation of a spoiler on an Accord has varying degrees of "needing to be accurate", depending on the type. Installation of a wing spoiler is significantly easier than that of a lip spoiler, assuming that the wing spoiler uses the factory mounting locations. if you look under the trunk lid, you'll see two small indentations on the edge of each side of the lid, right near the back top edge. When you install a factory wing spoiler, you drill from these premarked holes from the inside - negating the need for a center-punch and meaning that when the drill bit goes thru the metal, you won't screw up your paint if the chuck area contacts the car.
On a lip spoiler, you need to apply the template, mark the car, use a lightly-tapped centerpunch to start drilling, and then drill HUGE holes to accept the 4 screws that hold the lip spoiler in. It's this job that you have to really take your time with, and insure you get the template right and don't muck the paint by pushing too hard on the drill while drilling.
So for me, I'd do the wing spoiler in a heartbeat, but the lip spoiler I'd be more cautious, and use a professional if you're uncomfortable with measuring and being careful about drilling...

Thanks Andy.
Gonna look at the 'pre-marked' holes you speak of when I get my car back. Mom driving it becuase my dad parked her car in the side driveway, which is a steep slope, with no gas in the tank. :lmao: :lmao: .

After checking, looks like I have a new style mounting location with the raised bump. I also watched a how-to for installing a spoiler by Collegehillshonda.com and I'm somewhat feeling better about doing it myself.
