View Full Version : gas prices making a difference?? princess 05-18-2004, 04:17 PM what kind? princess 05-18-2004, 04:27 PM I just thought you might want to share..... I think looking to the prez for help is useless..... what can he do anyway? If he helps pay for the oil, we're paying anyway, with taxes! What do you think? BenjiBoy650 05-18-2004, 06:09 PM Hehe thanks for including the parents in the poll ;) It doesn't make a difference for any of us because both my dad and I like to drive. Even if gas was $3 a gallon, we'd still drive like crazy :) At least if we ask the president to help pay for gas, he uses taxes that we pay already anyway. So he could pay for a lot of gas instead of oh say...a bonus for all government workers...ya know? I am being more pro-active about saving gas when I drive though. I replaced the spark plugs and got a 3MPG increase...WoW! I tried not being so leadfooted but I found that shifting at 2000RPM actually uses more gas than shifting at 3000RPM. If I can ever smack myself silly enough, I'll try 3500-4000RPM on one tank. On the Camry forums they report that their cars are MUCH more fuel efficient shifting at 4000 than at 3000, sometimes about 3-5MPG better! princess 05-18-2004, 06:42 PM You're welcome.....I've noticed a few that it could apply to..... Problem with the gov. bailouts is they end up raising taxes later to pay for it. We all pay enough tax.... In a station in San Diego they're paying 4$ per gallon. It's a real old fashioned-check your oil- full service. We paid 2.50-2.80 on our trip. We gassed up in Anaheim to come home & could've made it all the way... but gas is cheaper in Lodi than here, so we filled up there. That way I'd have plenty when we got here. (Remember, I don't do gas pumps!) I like that even with winds we can go all the way to DL on one tank!! We always have a 100+ mile stretch of headwind on I5.:( dskulski 05-18-2004, 06:47 PM no, I'm not bothered by the increase. Who is complaining anyway? It's only an extra 3-4 dollars per full tank compared to what it was at its low not too long ago, and it will go down by late summer. Milk is 2.59 a gallon and I don't hear anyone cranky about that. I do wish however I could just take the turnpike to work and get more miles out of the gallon, but unfortunately I take all county roads, so I end up getting 20-23 mpg. BenjiBoy650 05-18-2004, 06:53 PM You get 20-23MPG but you got 240HP. I get 20-23MPG, but I only got 150. Be happy :) Dave 05-18-2004, 07:18 PM my wallet definately isnt happy. i could cut my fuel bill dramatically if i just drove when i had too and took the shortest route. i am one of those people that will drive just for the sake of driving. i find it to be very calming. my version of meditation. :) BenjiBoy650 05-18-2004, 07:29 PM I tend to find the longest way to get places. I stretch my school commute by about 33% (it's only 3 miles normally, I stretch to 4, so 1/3 = 33%...whatever). I try to let my car run as long as possible so that it's got time for everything to warm up. I think it does more harm than good since I do all city, but oh well. I figure if it's made it this far then it's okay. my1staccord 05-19-2004, 06:28 AM Still driving the same amount, and still shifting too high = bad gas mileage. I leave work stressed, and driving my accord is my stress relief. Yes it does cost more in gas but not as much as my 02 V8 Tundra did!!! princess 05-20-2004, 07:12 AM Sounds like a few of us could use our cars as a tax write off under medical!!:D benjamming 05-20-2004, 07:01 PM Originally posted by dskulski Milk is 2.59 a gallon and I don't hear anyone cranky about that. I should let you talk to some of my folks. I hear plenty of wailing. Wait, it's only $2.59/gal where you are? It's $3.35-$4.25/gal (store brand vs. name brand) here. BenjiBoy650 05-20-2004, 09:02 PM Well I drink a lot of milk so it can't be an issue. I drink less now, we used to do 2 gallons a week but it's down to one a week now. I guess redlining the car tonight didn't help the gas situation much  princess 05-21-2004, 05:46 AM I know lots of people complaining about our 4+$ per gallon for milk. My daughter goes through a few gallons per week of it. Everything's higher here, except maybe some produce. The median price of a house is now 520K. That will get you a condo or SMALL track home in an older neighborhood, about 900 square ft. or so. Inspector1 05-21-2004, 11:23 AM Gal Milk.. Grocery 2.99 Walgreens Pharmacy... name brand 1.99 Gas ;;;;; Monday-Weds(19th)1.88gal .. Thurs (20th)2.13 Gal..... Friday 1.99 all over the place..... Unfortunately I have to drive for a living so Yes it hits the wallet harder.... Monthly gas bill 4/03 126.40....... 4/04 259.95 Big jump in 1 year!!!!! I am not looking forward to 5/04 bill probably 300+ That's just me the Mrs. is anywhere from 0-30 per month. I just look at it as a Business expense... Although yesterday I skipped the 2.13 gal and found 1.83 gal less than 20 miles away.... I guess they raised price 30 cents to get all those people that didn't get gas on the 19th ..ha I1:) stiller fan 08-30-2004, 02:31 PM it's only $1.81 in pittsburgh...around lawerenceville area... :jumping:    but, i'm only getting about 22-25mpg with my 93 accord...  i know this is off-topic, but does anyone know where in the northeast that you can get a permanent coating of rain-x put on all of ur windows? i know lexus does it with a few of their cars now, and maybe bmw...any thoughts??? anysia 08-31-2004, 03:40 AM hehe, princess, we paid 82.5k for a house with 780 sq ft of living space (if you include the partially finished gameroom). it's a 50 yr old ranch in an older neighborhood, but it's all brick and in great condition. needed some updating when we bought it, but we've been working on that piece by piece. similar houses with all of the updating done sell for about 100-110k around here. pittsburgh is pretty cheap for houses! :D oh, i filled up last week at 1.85 per gallon. the highest it got for us was about 2.02 a few months ago. we're pretty "cheap" there as well! princess 08-31-2004, 06:45 AM Even when the jobs fell apart in the high-tech field here, real estate stayed high! I'd be willing to live somewhere else after retirement....if it ever happens....but he's not. He likes the weather & the variety here. I'm hoping to live up in the Redding area. I want to be in the boonies with land & pine trees, but only about 30 minutes from a mall! Unfortunately, I've been pricing up there & it's about like here..... I just can't justify 500K for it! Gas prices here have stabilized somewhat. On our trip we paid just under 2$ pg. It's slightly less here in town, but I'm not sure exactly how much. I'll look while running errands today. BenjiBoy650 08-31-2004, 09:39 AM I think almost all of CA is pretty expensive. My uncle just sold 1700 sq ft 30 year old house for $720,000 and that's in just an okay neighborhood. You could buy a mansion with that in Nebraska! Or somewhere around there...haha anysia 08-31-2004, 10:18 AM in pennsylvania 720k would buy a huge house too! princess 08-31-2004, 11:17 AM I was wrong about gas prices now....2.05-2.47 while I was out & about.... Coil99 10-06-2004, 10:57 AM The 1,050mi drive from Tenn to Mass last weekend got me thinking about this thread. The gas prices increased the further north we got. We took the Odyssey and the best we could get was about 27mpg...with most fill-ups less than that. 'Course, that was running the A/C and with a lot of hills throughout the trip. BTW, I voted "other" in the poll. I usually don't drive all that much, so I just pay the higher prices without thinking about it much. Plus, I've had cars that got much worse MPG than the Accord. I'm curious what MPG you're getting in the Accord? My '99 EX 5-speed is only getting 22ish in the city (worse 18MPG, before I replaced the worn spark plugs), and my best was on the freeway with 30MPG, but that was with the tires inflated at 37PSI. What gives?! Coil99 10-07-2004, 05:58 AM Originally posted by BenjiBoy650 I'm curious what MPG you're getting in the Accord? What gives?! I range between 22 and 27MPG. My driving is a mix of city and highway, with mostly city. But, Knoxville isn't "city driving" like, say, Boston is "city driving;" you generally don't idle for a long time, don't have the constant starts/stops, etc. I haven't checked the mileage with a pure highway run as I haven't had the opportunity yet. But I do wonder how it will do. I'll watch my fill-ups over the next month or so and post what I find. Overall, we sound like we're getting about the same. Is anyone else w/ a 5spd getting much better mileage? anysia 10-07-2004, 07:18 AM i've been getting around 30 in my 04 5spd mt, but the 7th gen is supposed to get better mileage right? my daily commute is 70+ miles and i would say mostly highway, but with all the dang construction zones, it's more like city driving! stupid traffic nightmares!! according2me 10-08-2004, 08:59 AM Here's an oldy with some road trip (http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=101) mileages. Coil99 10-10-2004, 07:57 AM Originally posted by Coil99 I'll watch my fill-ups over the next month or so and post what I find. I filled up last night and recorded 25.46mpg. That is a city/highway mix, with more city. It also involved less A/C use since East Tenn has cooled down some. BenjiBoy650 10-10-2004, 08:37 AM I'm on an all city schedule right now and I'm at 1/4 tank left with 230 miles on the tank. I think that's about right, should figure out to be about 22-23MPG, but I don't recall it being this bad since a long time ago! |
