i just totaled my 1999.5 vw jetta the other day. i ran off the road some how but do not remember anything that happened the cops said it was most likely caused by a blow out or somthing, i hit two brick lamp posts and a fire hydrent killing my frame suspention and alot of other stuff. :bawling: the cops diden't know how i diden't even get a scrach on me, they said i should have been hurt really bad but vw are so safe  the car even started when i went to look at it and ran fine

it drives really nice but it is an auto :(
i had a cel pop up befor i even got home car ran rough for a little then fine took it to auto zone and found out it was a missfire so i changed the plugs and it runs fine now. but on the #2 plug it had oil all around the plug boot and in where the plug goes. i know this is not right and i need some advice on how to fix this or if it even matters if i do. i also think i need new timing belts but i am not sure when they were done last.

Welcome to the forum!
What made you decide on the 97 Accord?

I know the issue!
My 96 (Same car basically) had this issue; it's a Cam Tower O-Ring. a.k.a. ~Tube Seal~. There are upper and lower tube seals on these cars, the lower ones are prone to fail first. I had ALL of them replaced for prevenative and OCD issues. It's your choice if you want to invest that into your car.
It was $310.00 at my dealer. If your technically inclined, or have an ind. mechanic you trust, you should save signifigant money.
Has the Timing belt and water pump been changed on this vehicle? (Due every 90k)This is a major service of which I recommend gets done pronto. If your unsure as to weather its been done or not, just have it done, at 146k, it could snap any seccond. These are interference engines, so valves will be damaged if it breaks.
Sorry to hear you lost the Jetta, the Accord is quite a step away from that direction, but it seems you're adjusting well. You'll be in love in no time :-).
About the timing belt, if you do it yourself (not recommended) I suggest you be VERY careful as to following the specifications. It could result in servere mechanical consequences.
Happy Honda Days! And Welcome to DA!

i chose a 97 accord because my mom used to have a 92 and it was a great car, and my grandma ownes a 95 right now. my grandma bought it new and has put 40k on hers so far.
ya i tried to buff my old car out but it diden't work that well :dunno:
as for safe yes that vw was very safe. sad to see it go
i am geting the timingbelts changed soon but i have to change the water pump too?
i changed the timing belt and water pump myself on my jetta it took me 5 hours. that was the first time i had ever done one but i don't know how much harder the honda with 2 belts will be and i can't find any good instructions with pics on it.
and yes i like the car alot i just wish it was a standard
and i think i will keep it oem i'm not going to rice it out
i might buy an i pod adaptor and install it and maby put my sub in but thats about it.
any advice will be welcome and thinks for that link. i think i will just leave it for now it's just one doing it and i want to do the timing belt first. oh ya is the water pump plastic and needs to be replaced with a metal one like i did with my jetta?
i have alot of reasearch to do

You don't HAVE to change the water pump - it probably won't be bad. The problem is that it's probably also not going to last until the NEXT time you change the timing belt, and to get to the water pump the belt has to come off anyway, so it's a waste not to do them together.

ok now how hard is it to do myself is it worth paying some one $400 to change the belt and pump or should i buy the parts for $150 and do it myself? and also i need to change my transmition fluid can i do that my self? is there a filter and do i heed any special tools? are there instructions?
sorry about all the questions.

Tranny fluid is easy, there's no filter either. There's instructions somewhere on the site but essentially what you're doing is draining it, then refill...kinda like oil. If you want to flush it, you just drain/fill, then drive around a little and shift through all gears incl. reverse, then do it all again.
The timing belt just my personal preference I would have someone do it. It's not something I'm comfortable doing for a few reasons, the biggest being that our engines are interference engines so if you mess it up you'll be looking at removing the head and changing some valves. I've seen a timing belt change on a 91 Integra RS, it was okay until he went to put the belt on and it was hard to tell if he got it on the right tooth. I also heard of two experienced mechanics doing a change in their backyard on a 2001 Odyssey 3.5 V6 and the belt managed to get loose = bent valves too.

so no filter on an auto?
ok cool
i shall look for the instructions

I'm not sure if there are 5th gen specific instructions, if you can't find any you can either ask princess for it or you can use these. They're for a 6th gen but it should be the same tranny, it's the same engine block.

We can't see your link, it's not static. You can look in the 7th gen faq, there's a section for Honda OEM part suppliers. Check those places first...it's important to use a Honda OEM belt because others tend to break early (60K vs. Honda 100K+)

Welcome to the forum
OUCH! for the Jetta!!!!
If you need instructions for something that you don't find on here, just PM me & I'll do my best to get them for you.
I'd recommend a Honda timing belt, from where ever you find it for the best price. The aftermarket ones last about 60K, the Honda 90K+. Water pumps are generally part of it.... we've always done timing belt, water pump, external belts & that nasty little seal at the same time. Saves labor later. :)
Here's the update/recall & a bulletin that may to your car, if you see oil on the outside....
