How many of you here own a 2002 Accord 4-cylinder and had a transmission failure or other transmission problems? I’m trying to find out how extensively the 2002 model year was affected by transmission problems of previous years? I know the warranty was extended on the previous years, why not 2002?

My father’s 2002 Accord with 43,000 miles started having transmission problems several weeks ago, namely hesitation to engage the first and reverse gears. When we had it looked at by the dealer they initially did not find any problems and recommended a transmission power flush. After the flush, they test drove the vehicle again and finally discovered the problems we were telling them about all along. I think the flush only made it worse. The transmission was diagnosed with “Harsh/Late Downshifts” and they say that it would eventually fail. They offered to replace it with my father only paying labor ($950.00) plus the transmission flush ($120.00).

I called the Honda customer service to try to get more out of them and see why the extended transmission warranty did not include 2002 Accords. So far they were of no help.

Does anyone know if they were any significant changes made to the transmissions between 2001 and 2002 to prevent failures?

Thanks for your help.

the trasmission in my V6 2002 gave me problems
in August 2005 it was replaced by Honda
when I balked on the price and advised I would rather sell the car they came back 2 days later with the same deal
Honda supplies a new transmission - I pay labor only
I took that deal and drove the car until DEC 2006 with no further transmission issues
it was about the same price for labor $750 - not a bad deal considering the car was out of warranty

I have 2002 v6, too. No problem on transmission.. I hope not and just replace the SRS system unit, cost me $500 something with labor. ..

This is the same deal two of my neighbors got when their trannies died on their Odesseys. They weren't happy since one of them only had 41k on it.
