4 Reasons the Accord Coupe is Better than a Camaro

Four Reasons the Accord Coupe is better than a Camaro... and one reason it's not

It may surprise you to learn that the Honda Accord Coupe is one of the most cross-shopped cars with the Chevrolet Camaro. After all, one is a front-drive two-door version of a family sedan, while the other is a purpose-built Muscle car.

And yet the two stack up quite closely in many respects, though certainly not in all of them. Here’s a list of four ways the Accord is a better car… and one way it most certainly is not.

1. It's Faster

It may be hard to believe but the Accord will out drag-race a Camaro.

Now we’re not talking about a 426 hp Camaro SS, but just a regular old V6 model. Still, with 312-hp on tap the Camaro’s numbers are bigger than the Accord at 278-hp, but it also weighs 350-lbs more.

According to Chevrolet the Camaro will hit 60 mph in just under 6.0 seconds while Honda says the Accord will do it in 5.5 seconds, if not better. And if that’s not enough, comparing the Accord’s six-speed manual transmission to that of the Camaro’s is like comparing a Swiss watch to a sun dial.

5. The Accord just lost out to the BMW 3-series when Car and Driver ran its latest Camaro vs. Mustang "Best of Detroit" shootout.

I'm not saying one is better then the other, but I can say that camaros are a pain in the ass to park compared to most. Very bulky car with lots of blind spots.

The camaro's have tiny windows... its weird.

I had a V8 fourth-gen Camaro that was rated at 275 HP. That thing was FAST! Now it amazes me how much power the automakers are pulling out of these V6's.

No doubt a new Accord coupe will outperform a Camaro, but it is still FWD, and this alone will turn a lot of enthusiasts away. Now that Asian competitors are creating RWD 2+2 sports coupes like the Scion FRS/Subaru BRZ, Hyundai Genesis, and Infiniti G, I believe Honda should step into the ring with something similar-whether it has the Accord badge or something new.

6. President Obama and his supporters have been more than happy to tout his bailout of the auto industry, but General Motors still owes taxpayers $42 billion according to an Inspector General's report and the company's stock has hit an all time low.

...comparison/analogy

....while I certainly appreciate the swiss watch/sundial comparison, my Gen7 6M remains in my garage for now.

OTOH, I would like a BRZ test drive (handling vs. acceleration: Subaru gets rave handling reviews; not so with the QM)

No complaints from this sailor.

Ha

I'll give you one reason

The honda, any honda will last 10+ years

You'll be lucky to get one year in a Chevy.

I used to work at n auto body shop, we had a chevy truck we'd use to run parts.

there was a corvette on the lot, it had the same stock radio as the chevy truck.

Then there are A LOT of lucky Chevy owners out there, past and present. And I'm one of them.

My 01 Sierra still runs good. Only complaint I have is that the interior parts fall apart

I traded a 2004 Chevy Colorado on my Accord. 144k and 8 years, very reliable. Yes, some of the interior plastic was cheap. So what.

Kind of an apples to oranges comparison, IMO. I always thought Accords were better than muscle cars though. Yes, muscle cars are faster but I like the Accord's balance and refinement (as the article points out).

The article says that for once the Accord IS faster than a V6 muscle car.

I'd take a V6 Accord over a Camaro or Mustang...but I'd still take a Vette--cheap interior be damned.

Muscle Cars stopped being made in 1970.

Today's cars are an embarrassment to use the term "Muscle Car".
