The LX has softer shocks than EX and coupe along with a more restrictive exhaust , maybe that is holding you back a bit in high rev's (above7k) .

Right, your pads are fine , just remove then ,clean out the dust and relube pins and backplates , make sure the inner pads tabs are lubed to with brake grease .

Battery life would be shortened if it was constant 14.0+ all the time , when not needed .
It would be nice if they did better...

Back then GM used plastic covered teeth over a cast hub and over time the plastic got brittle and broke up , jumping a tooth or two ....

You do realize what your describing is a lose of power , the CVT is able (if programed correctly) to keep rpm at best TQ/HP for the speed and not lose and gain like a conventional geared transmission...
