radio code...necessary?

Why the need for a 5 digit unlock code to get the radio to function once the battery is disconnected?!? Is someone going to steal an 8th gen radio and "retro" fit it into another vehicle?!?

Seems like overkill, as all 8th gen accords have the same radio and it won't work in any other car. Has the stealing of accord radios been such a prevalent issue that they felt the need to spend the $ on engineering a radio that requires a code? I would think that using that money elsewhere (like improving build quality so that it doesn't break in the first place, thus no one has a reason to steal your 8th gen radio and put it in their 8th gen )

I could understand putting it on the Nav units, as that was a more expensive option.

"Honda saving money" has nothing to do with it, they buy it from the vendor (alpine, clarion, etc) with the code in it...

I'm wondering though if this is per Honda's request, as this is the only vehicle I've ever owned which the manufacturer felt that it was necessary to have a anti-theft code. It there anyway to bypass this so that I never have to enter in the code again no matter how many times I disconnect the battery?

the whole industry has used it for years....it is not honda's specific request...it is part of the build spec for vendors....

On the 7th gen the LX and VP only has a single CD. A 6 cd changer might be desirable to some. Not sure if it's like that on the 8th.

There are people in the world that will steal anything. I've met such people. Let say someone with an Accord (or any other vehicle) gets a CD stuck in the unit or it dies some other way. Instead of getting their radio repaired they will break into another car and take that one out. Without the code it's useless.

The radio is also tied into the vehicle security and will trigger the alarm when disconnected. It's definitely not a feature I can't live without but I won't complain that it's there.

It is as they only build what Honda tells em.

I agree!! but if they can steal they have no problems getting the code.

Yes, it is pointless. It doesn't actually PREVENT a theft of the radio.

As with any anti-theft device or feature, they are meant to be a theft deterrent. Nothing is safe if someone wants what you have. I would prefer something rather than nothing at all.

the layperson likes seeing anti-theft on the window sticker when they're car shopping and feel the warm and fuzzy reassurance each time they see the little blinking red led that keeps the bad people away. actual effectiveness is not even a consideration.

amen...soooo many features that are on cars today are there solely because they can buy them cheap from the same company (or like companies) because it's on a competitors car.....

this is particularly true of electronic things.....when the tsunami hit Japan, BMW could not build X3's for months becasue the display screens were not avail from their Japanese supplier....it's one world now....

Honda/Acura single DIN head units had codes for years.

Also, how about the GM/Delco Theftlock cassette/CD head units?

You mean the ones that can be removed with two bent cost hangers? Those are great.
