I was thinking about this too, to upgrade my stock 16s to better ones, since the car came with 2 rims with so much curb rash, i'm surprised they still sold it with the car. But, I think i'm going to settle with 17s instead of 18s, going for the TSW Vortex 17s!

I found this comparator to be more helpful than many others I have seen. Helps determine how much closer it will be to suspension, etc... Good luck!

My winter rims are 16 inch and the only reason I went with 16s is because of the tire price difference. My snow tires were $83 a piece. If I were to buy the 17 inch tires for my factory rims I would have spent $123 for the same tire. It also gives me a chance to run summer tires on my factory rims. If you do price comparos for tires it is amazing the price increase from 16inch to 17 inch and bigger. the price for 16 and below is alot more affordable.

honda accord, 16" wheels vs 18" wheels

I'm upgrading my 16s to oem 10 spokes 18s rims. Are the diameter of the wheels bigger than 16? Would I need to reset the computer ? Will I get bad mpg?

Depends on what tire size you go with. My stock is 215/50R17 and I'm running 235/45R18 - speedo is 2mph too slow (when speedo says 60mph I'm really doing almost 62mph).

Your stock is 205/60R16.

Wheel size - Actual speed when speedo reads 60mph:
215/45R18 - 59.8mph
225/40R18 - 58.6mph
225/45R18 - 60.7mph
225/50R18 - 62.7mph
235/40R18 - 59.3mph
235/45R18 - 61.5mph
235/50R18 - 63.7mph

Gives you an idea of how your speedo will be affected as you increase or decrease tire size

My stock is 215. The tires from the seller are 235/45/18. Based on your post I would get an increase. Will that increase my mpg?

A mechanic also told me this will damage my transmission faster..

With a larger tire you will actually see a slight decrease in mpg if anything. Did he back that statement up with any evidence? I'm sure his logical thinking is that a larger tire diameter and the speedo being slightly off will put a bit more work on the transmission...but I do not see it actually "damaging" the transmission.

Folks have been up-sizing wheels for decades and I have never heard of that being a direct cause to transmission failure...

If the overall diameter of the 18s are the same as my 16s. I'm don't have any worries. I just want wider tires and better looking rims but I hate all of those negative factors

He backed it up from seeing customer cars with messed up tranny that have bigger rims. Years of experienced mechanic

thats kind of where i'm at on this also.

i may compromise and go with a 17" wheel. I'm currently looking at some OEM Acura TL wheels. i think they will be a great compromise. and they apear to be lighter also, this should have some positive affects.

I have been Plus Sizing wheels on my vehicle for years, I have a older Toyota Pickup that came with 14" wheels & I install 15" wheels for 130k miles, then upgraded to 17" wheels for an additional 200k mile with No I'll effects on trans.

I've seen more damage from cars that had OEM negative offset wheels and someone installed positive offset wheels and damaged the ball joints from the stress, then anything else.

Perhaps people that typically put bigger rims on their car also thrash the transmission.

Correlation # Causation. Cruise control was invented in 1945, yet it had little bearing on the end of WWII.
