also I seldom cross 100 KM/HR...my normal driving speed everyday is around 80 to 90 KM/HR with 2 KM of start/stop/slow driving 20 KM/HR everyday.

As DreaminAccord said:

1. Go to a gas station and fill up the tank until the nozzle clicks and automatically stops filling. Do not overfill your tank.

2. Reset your trip A meter to zero.

3. Drive until tank is half way empty or more.

4. Fill up the tank again until the nozzle clicks and automatically stops. If possible, use the same gas station and pump. Do not overfill your tank.

5. Write down how many liters of gas you put in.

6. Write down the mileage on trip A meter.

7. Divide the number of KM traveled by liters of gas put in from step # 4. This is your true KM/L (or MPG)

And would you clarify what you mean by "city driving?"
- I am reposting this because this is the reason why the OP is not getting a sensible number. OP, do this, then let us know what you get.

His calculation may, in fact, be correct if he's only travelling 6km at a time. Half of the trip is probably warming up the engine. Stop and go gives pretty bad mpg. Worst I've ever averaged was 19-20 in my v6 according to my scangauge, which is very accurate.

Umm.... no.

You cannot accurately know how much gas is in the tank or how much was used simply by looking at the needle's position.

Your calculations could be off by 1 or even 2 gallons if you just look at the needle.

The OP says he traveled 154 KM and thinks he used 22.22 liters of gas.

What if the OP was off by 1.5 gallons (5.67812 liters). So instead of using 22.22 liters, he used 16.54 liters.... 1.5 gallons less.

Being off by 5.67812 liters would give the OP:
154 KM/16.54 liters = 9.31 KM/L or 21.89 MPG.

Any time you are sitting in traffic with the engine running you are getting zero mpg. Spend enough minutes doing that and your mileage will nose dive. If there is much wrong with your engine it's computer should detect it and turn on the "check engine" light.

Agreed and combined with the 4 mile (6 km) drives, cold engine, AC running and stoplights, I would say the 16 mpg is about right.

Comparisons of city mpg from different locales are not valid. I get 16-18 in my area. Stop Light or stop sign on every corner. Very short trips--1-2 miles.
But normally get 28 on trips.

Didn't see the part about using the needle to calculate. I thought it was universally known that the needle is inaccurate and the only way to calc is through fill-ups. The OP probably isn't too far off though if he drives aggressively on short trips in traffic with the A/C on. I have to agree with the posts saying it's tough to compare. Driver, gas and environment all significantly sway the results.

One would think that elementary school math is foolproof. This must be post number #500 that I've seen here about poor mileage and the owner had no earthly idea how to figure it. I remain absolutely amazed.

Yeah, what does miles per gallon actually mean?

I agree that the MPG needs to be calculated differently . . . sounds like the OP is on it.

That said, I have seen 16 mpg before in my '97 i4, calculated with full tanks and the trip odometer. It averaged 28-30 mpg on the highway. This was during the winter making only short trips (2-3 miles at a time) - running mostly on a cold engine will definitely have a SIGNIFICANT impact on mileage. 6km is a very short trip. It's also lousy for the catalytic converter if you never let the whole system come up to normal operating temperatures.

I've never seen this with my '06, mostly because I got a longer commute before I bought the new car.

You kids with your fancy schmancy technology (i.e. chalk boards).
