Out of Spec Transmission...

Anybody here besides me have an RCL-2 transmission? I was changing my oil and thought I would take a look and sure enough my transmission is stamped RCL-2.

Excuse the ignorance but what is an RCL-2 tranny? Hopefully this isn't part of the Ody/Pilot tranny recall?

This relates to SB 04-020 that Princess posted a couple days ago. Certain Japan built 2004 Accords that require a new transmission. I don't know what is out of spec though.

It is the manufacturers stamping on the transmission case. The service bulletin that benjamming mentioned has all of the details.

Honda is using the stamping to determine if your transmission needs to be replaced or not. RCL-1 is good, RCL-2 is bad...

It's weird to see different assembly lines putting out the same car, yet only one has problems and the other is fine. Doesn't make sense to me but obviously there are differences between them because most recalls/TSB's deal with specific cars.

No... it's just the opposite. RCL-1 is bad and RCL-2 is good.

From the bulletin:

If the number is “RCL-2,” go to step 2 of
UPDATE PROCEDURE."

Step 2 of the Update Procedure is:

Center-punch a completion mark above the first
character of the engine compartment VIN.

The VIN range is the range of vehicles that could potentially have the defect. Not all vehicles in the VIN range will have RCL-1.

My Accord isn't in the VIN range, but I just checked it to make sure. It has RCL-2 on it.
