I bought the car in March '08 and in June '09 we were on our honeymoon for 10 days. I left the car in the garage during that time and when I came back it smelled like I was taking it off the show room floor again. It seemed like not having any outside scents in the car for almost two weeks allowed the smell to accumulate again.

When I got my Accord it still smelled new, that was at like 35k miles.. Unfortunately I HAD a dirty habit that replaced that new car smell with something that doesn't smell so nice..

The new car smell is dangerous is what i heard but mine lasted for about a month and a half. I started using a freshner after about a month but now i get a mix of both the new car smell as well as the freshner. maybe a unique smell in itself i guess...

New car smell is gases being released from the materials/plastics....

I will quote myself for those that missed the post...

Cliff notes for those with short attention spans = New car smell is bad stuff!

According to research, the car dashboard, upholstery, air freshener emit Benzene, a cancer-causing toxin (carcinogen - take time to observe the smell of heated plastic in your car). In addition to causing cancer, Benzene poisons your bones, causes anemia and reduces white blood cells. Prolonged exposure may cause Leukemia, Increasing the risk of cancer.. May also cause miscarriage.

Acceptable Benzene level indoors is 50 mg per sq. Ft.. A car parked indoors with windows closed will contain 400-800 mg of Benzene. If parked outdoors under the sun at a temperature above 60 degrees F (10 degrees C), the Benzene level goes up to 2000-4000 mg, 40 times the acceptable level.
People who get into the car, keeping windows closed will inevitably inhale, in qui ck succession, excessive amounts of the toxin. Benzene is a toxin that affects your kidneys and liver. What's worse, it is extremely difficult for your body to expel this toxic stuff.

So friends, please open the windows and door of your car - give time for interior to air out - dispel the deadly stuff .
