Clutch or Transmission Problem? Help??

A brief summary of what happened to my 1996 accord ex 5 spd ~220k miles:
The clutch had started to slip a little and then after a long trip, I started having trouble shifting into gear. I made it through the trip and one short 20min trip after that. The next morning, my car would hardly do anything.

After starting, I had to hold the clutch for the car to even idle. If I let out on the clutch, it acts as if it's in gear and wants to move forward but lacks the power to do so (or to engage) and dies out. I revved a little more to see if the car would move and maybe pop out of the gear it's in but it only seemed to hurt the situation so I stopped and had the car towed to the shop. It seems to me like the car is stuck in one of the gears (3rd maybe?) and nothing I do will disengage...

Any thoughts? I want to feel confident that the mechanic is legit since I'm new to the area and went by an online review when making my selection on short notice.
