P1009- vtc
2007 2.4l, exl model. 5spd. Had the engine light come on last week. Weather was very hot and the car was hot as i was drivig at low speeds. The car sputtered and shook for a couple seconds, engine light came on. It seemed to run fine after that, however whenever the rad fans would turn on the engine made a distinct "clunk". I checked the code readwr and got the p1009 code. A mechanic friend of mine put the car on his code reader and got the same code, however he said it was a "undocumented code" and to his knowledge had no idea what it was. He also got a code for the camshaft position sensor. I changed both sensors and cleared the codes.
Yesterday i was driving, hot weather, engine light came on again. Engine was idling at 1100rpm and was makig a "winding" noise on acceleration. Engine oil is recently changed, clean, and is at the proper level. Only 126000km of which i have only put on 12000. Bought the car because my 2002 had 300000km with no issues. This is the second significant problem in a few months. i cannot find much info online except take it to the dealer. Any help would be appreciated, on a budget, 2 small kids, need a car. |

Thanksfor the reply, however i have read both of those posts before. The second is useless. I am going to try and find the vtc actuator this weekend. I have a hard time believing its a stretched timing chain.

How do you know if the vtc is bad after you pull it out?

Honda says to clear the code then recheck to see if it comes back. Since it did for you, the next check is to see if the strainer for the VTC is clogged. If so, clean it out and do an oil change. You can also check the VTC passages. Sometimes P0341 can happen at the same time as P1009. The strainer is somewhere close to the PS pump because Honda indicates removal of the pump and tensioner to access he strainer. Sorry but I've never had it off myself but the pic I have shows a small plate held on to the engine with 2 bolts.

I have found the location of the VTC and the strainer. I haven't taken the strainer out yet but I will. I just changed my oil 2000km ago with Castrol sythetic. Oil is still clean. I will clean out the strainer and see if it happens again.
The P1009 code has come up twice, both in similar situations, hot weather. I have cleared it both times just to see if it was a one time thing. Thanks for the post. |
