Starter won't disengage, removal? 93 accord

Hello all,

I recently bought a 93 accord LX, manual trans.

I want to pull the starter out to diagnose it. Does anyone know how to go about doing this?

Should I go in from the top or the bottom of the car?

Also, does anyone know if I could disconnect the power from the starter and try to "push start" the car? Or would the bendix still be engaged and I risk damaging the flywheel?

Will the car run with the power to the starter disconnected?

P.s. I towed the car to my house today, and tapped on the starter. Then tried to see if I could put the battery cable back on. It immediately sparked so I stopped.

Help is greatly appreciated!

Background:

The last owner ran it out of gas, and cranked on the starter over and over again trying to get it to start.

He put gas in it and it started but then the starter would not disengage and he had to pull the battery cable.
