22k miles since I power flushed my Transmission
It has been almost two years since I had my transmission powerflushed.
I was told by many it was an immediate death sentence for the transmission. Nothing happened. Then "they" said wait till 3k miles. Nothing happened. Then "they" said wait till 10k miles. Yada yada yada it has been 22k miles and almost two years. Runs really well. Just did a single drain and fill with Redline D4. The fluid that came out was red,no funny smells, and no junk in the fluid either. I know that may not be indicative of the condition of the fluid and only an oil analysis is scientifally valid but reporting what I saw, felt, and smelled. Ain't paying for aft analysis. A single drain and fill with D4 will be part of my yearly routine now as well as Pennzoil Platinum and Mobil1 M1-110 filter.

When my 99 I4 had 60k on it the shop flushed the trans. Sold the car at 166k with the original trans. Prior to the 60k service the trans had been serviced a few times. I think it CAN be an issue when the car has higher miles without having regular trans servicing and it's flushed. For instance if the fluid is brown or black. The logic is the flushing can stir up some crap which can potentially block one of the many tiny internal passages. After the 60k flush I had drain/fills done.

Sometimes a tranny power flush can cause bad things to happen.
I had the tranny flushed on my GM car at the 60k mile service. A few thousand miles later, I had to have it rebuilt at AAMCO for $2,800. ![]() But I blame the repair shop since they may have not filled up the tranny enough to fill the aux tranny cooler. But either way, a simple drain and refill more often is much safer than forcing around fluid in your transmission.

Even at 60k miles it should be more then safe to do a tranny flush as long as the condition of the fluid and tranny are in ok condidtion.

I have 30 plus years working in truck and auto shops, with 15 years in a tranny shop.I have never seen a trans flush harm a good tranny.I have seen people try to fix a trans problem with a trans flush, and have it not help or make it worse.Fresh fluid can help some trans problems, but not all of them.Let the service advisor know if there is a problem with the trans prior to a fluid flush.Have a diagnostic test preformed if there is a problem.I have seen many trans problems turn out to be an elec/control or engine problem.
The only ATF additive I can say that works as stated is Lube Guard.Saab had some torque converter clutch shudder problems and their TSB solution was to add Lube Guard to the fluid. This is just my $.02,and probably worth much less than that.

My 91 Has Been Power Flushed 3 or 4 Times
I have a 91 Accord EX that I've had since 1993. Currently at 342,000 miles with the original transmission. I've had it power flushed at least 2, probably 3 times and never had a problem. The last power flush was done about 30,000 miles ago. I've never had any transmission problems or leaks whatsoever. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to do it, and I don't recommend it but my transmission is running as good as the day I got it 19 years ago! I was warned when I had it done that it could possibly cause leaks but it didn't. I'm not going to do it anymore but it didn't hurt. I also always did a single drain and fill of transmission fluid every 20,000 to 30,000 miles since I got the car with 39,000 miles on it which helped I'm sure.

All the flush machines I've seen around here use the transmission's own ATF pump (at idle) to push the old ATF out and into the machine, that in turn, via a bladder inside the machine, also pushes the new ATF in. There is no extra pump inside the machine! So the result is the flush is doing nothing more than the transmission does just driving it, except instead of the ATF going to the cooler, its going into the flush machine and new fluid is coming back.
The real killer to a transmission is heat, which breaks down the ATF. The longer you drive with old, broken-down ATF the quicker the tranny will die. |

IMHO it is because many people don't ever think about their car's ATF until it starts doing something strange. Then they decide to change the ATF after the damage has already been done and the tranny is about ready to die. Then shortly after the transmission "flush" it goes ahead and dies and they blame it on the flush. They should blame it on going 100,000 miles without a flush.
A good analogy is, you wouldn't go without changing your motor oil for 40,000 miles and expect an oil change to undo the damage done. ![]() This is a good DIY alternative to a flush machine, even better in many ways since it also cleans the pan and changes the ATF filter: http://www.amsoil.com/faqs/ATF_and_F...Procedures.pdf |
