07 accord 144k - broken tranny :(

I posted in here to get an idea of what I should do....

It just happened to be the worst of the worst

Car: 2007 Honda Accord SE 4cyl Sedan 5AT (U.S.)

I noticed last week my transmission was acting funny. This weekend, I had a slip or two and the D light was blinking, however, it drove fine. I disconnected the battery terminals and everything went back to normal, or so I thought.

Come yesterday, tranny was slipping like crazy! I had no idea and thought it best to take it to the dealer. The guy told me the "clutch" was stuck internally on the torque converter...wtf? When did Automatics get a clutch?

Anyways, he quoted me $4400 for a new tranny.

I'm lost as what to do here. I got a trade-in quote for $6500 which isn't bad but I am not ready to part with my car yet! My '03 accord lasted me 240k+ miles without many hiccups (A/C system was replaced) and my uncle is currently driving it (so it's probably closer to 300k).

What would you guys do in my situation? Trade it in? Look for a used tranny and swap it out? Rebuild it? Take it to another mechanic?

I'm sure it's the tranny or the torque converter, but not sure exactly which.

Thanks in advanced!

DUMP IT, time to move on. That's assuming the car is paid off and you have the means to do so.

If the trade-in quote is with the broken transmission then take it.

Auto transmissions do have clutch packs BTW.

If you had no intention to buy a new car any time soon, I wouldn't do it just because of this. You could maybe get Honda to help with the bill, or go to another transmission shop. I think they gave you an inflated number on the trade, just to entice you into buying a new one.

Oh honda didn't entice me at all...they said $5k pre-drive...minus whatever after.

This was another dealer called Texas Direct Auto and it was cash in hand (check) regardless of me buying or not.

What about buying a used tranny and swapping it out? How much do you guys think it will cost me?

Well, my '07 AV6 has 130k. I'm at the dealership now with an alignment issue. Wife drives car primarily, and says trans seems to slip. so, I've driven it all this week. No real noticeable issues.

If it were me, I'd replace the trans, and ride on. Though $4.4k seems a lot, I'm sure half of that is labor costs. There was a reputable place I would've gone for cheaper install rates, but its all up to you. Ours is paid for, and I refuse to jump back into a NEW note! LOL Costs more in he long run.

;-)

Don't buy used. Get a reputable shop to rebuild and give you a warranty.

I should ask how often did you change your transmission fluid?

Nice point, but it's not going to solve the problem...

Have you called other transmission shops and got a price quote? it might be a better investment on your end to have a professional shop do it for you, so at least if something should happen, it should be covered under their warranty.

In my opinion, wait until you've gotten several price quotes from other shops before making a decision. You did mention that you'd like to keep the car, so I think it's a little too early to decide with just one quote from a Honda dealer.

Honda dealers dont rebuild transmissions, they send them out to a repair shop, so you might as well skip the middle man (dealer) and get a better price. The dealers labor rate will be the highest too. Be sure to discuss and compare waranties on all your transmission repair quotes.

Make sure to do any other little things they might could do while they're working on the transmission.

For example... my Taurus' head cracked and I had that replaced, but didn't have them replace the piston rings. After I got it back I found my rings were bad and I was losing oil like crazy. Looking back, I wish I had spent the extra hundred dollars or so to have them replaced.

But, that car died and I'm driving an Accord, so it's not as bad as it seems.

That 5ucks. Can't recall any other I4 7G Accords with a transmission failure.

Guess you should add yourself to Drew03Accord's failure log?

A good indy trans shop should be able to do it for around $2k. Just research good trans shops in your area via angieslist, bbb ratings, how long in biz etc...
