1. Remove the map light console and dome light, and disconnect their wire harnesses 2. Insert one wire, just one wire, on the roof lining so that it could reach both the map lights and the dome light. 3. In the Map light wire harness, You will notice that the plug has only two wires attached even though it has 3 holes, you connect that one wire that you just inserted in the roof lining to that unoccupied hole. 4. connect the other end of that wire to the pink wire of the dome light harness. 5. Replace everything back and map lights should turn on when door opens |

I think any stranded wire is good, like 14-16 gauge

There should also be two screws hidden under the sunglasses holder, so total of 4, idk if its the same for the 7th gen. Once u remove the screws, u need to slide that entire trim towards the front and then it can be removed from the headliner, and you will see the harness wire attached to the map lights.

Hmm. I want to do this and jgo86x made it look much easier. If anybody will be doing this too and wont mind taking more detailed pics I'd appreciate it.

Ok, I've decided to take apart the map and dome lights and take pictures so I could write a DIY...here it goes:
Step 1. ![]() Remove all 4 screws of the map light/sunglasses holder after you removed the map light lenses and opened the sunglasses holder. Step 2. ![]() Pull from the front (where the map lights are) then slide the whole console towards the windshield. Then unplug that harness. Step 3. ![]() Remove the two screws of the dome light after you removed the dome light cover. Step 4. ![]() Unplug the dome light harness Step 5. Insert a wire (about 14-16 gauge, stranded wire) through the opening of the dome light towards the map light opening. I wrapped it in jvcc 1mm felt tape (found on amazon) which is 1 inch wide and about 1 1/2 feet long to prevent it from making tapping sounds against the headliner. You can use a thin weatherstrip to dampen this noise as well and it also helps you insert the wire through the openings easier. Step 6 (Optional if you dont want to splice factory dome light wire harness) ![]() Make sure you close all doors and lock the car (to make sure dome light circuit isnt active) or pull the negative terminal of the battery before you proceed. Use a tiny flathead screwdriver (like an eyeglass repair screwdriver) to push the plastic tab where the pink wire is and at the same time pull on the pink wire to remove it from the connector. Step 7 (Optional if you dont want to splice factory dome light wire harness) ![]() Cable tie the wire you just inserted through headliner to the factory harness. Then pry out that metal tab (red arrow) and use that to anchor the wire you inserted through headliner. Then cut wire to desired length and cut insulator out. Then wrap wire around where the green arrow is. You may solder to ensure stable connection. Step 8 ![]() Insert wire to the unoccupied hole of the map light harness, then cable tie the wire to the harness. Step 9 ![]() Cut wire to desired length and cut out at least 1/2 inch of insulator. Then pull wire back a little so some of the exposed wire goes inside the connector then fold remaining exposed wire to the side of the connector as shown in the picture. I fold it this way cause when I inspected the map light console, there are exposed connections and the wire may touch those connnections if not careful, and the side of the connector appears to be the safest. (You may also solder this exposed wire to prevent fraying) Step 10. Plug map light harness back to map light console, please pay attention to that wire so it doesnt end up folding over to the other connections, and then reassemble everything back. Hope this helps! BTW, I have all LEDS, so idk if the stock bulbs will draw too much current for that one dome light wire to handle, FYI. Credit goes to cdseven95 as I didnt know how to do it until he posted his diy photos. Thanks! |

Stupid question but how do you unplug the sockets/harness wire from both the map lights and dome light? I'm assuming you need to squeeze something and pull but I cant find anything to squeeze
