@shawn: Was that with any extended warranty? If so which company was it through.

------

Ok I'm finally sitting here with my paperwork. I was a little off on my numbers so here goes:

Total delivered price: $22,238.00 (this includes the dealer options of the clear coat & interior protectant, pin stripe, and mud guards).

Extended service contract: $1,795.00 (6 years / 100k - $100 deductible)
Optional car care plan: $750.00 (4 years / 50k - for oil changes & any other regular maintenance)

I did also confirm that this is a REFUNDABLE policy. Here is text:

Purchase Price Refund: Upon expiration of this Service COntract if you have not had a claim under this Service Contract, do not have a claim pending payment, and if YOU follow the steps outlined below, the purchase price of YOUR service contract will be refunded to YOU, less a $50 administration fee that FWS will charge and retain.

So, the question becomes, do I feel confident that this Honda will have no issues or causes for claim for the next 6 years that would justify me paying more than the Honda Care warranty. Also, does the optional care plan of $750 make sense or not. I will be looking to my service manual to try and do some estimates on cost. While perfectly capable of doing oil changes and other minor work, it's nice not to have to. So I'll have to weigh that out.

It wasn't with the extended warranty or anything. This is the second Accord I've bought brand new and I didn't even need the 1st one I had, so I opted out of it this time. But one plus is that the dealer I got it from gave a Lifetime Powertrain Warranty, which was the first time I heard of that with only a $100 deductable

Your call on the Fidelity warranty. If you can get a 100% refund, less $50... it might be worth keeping. Just don't use it on small claims.

FWIW: I bought a 5 year/60K HondaCare when I got my car... was only ~ $430 so I didn't care since I got the car for so cheap. I never needed to use it.

As for the optional car care plan... depends on how many miles you drive and how they're put on. To keep things simple, let's say you're like most Americans and drive 15K per year which averages out to 1250 miles per month. At that rate, you'll hit 50K in about 3 years 4 months.

The dealer will likely have you follow the Maintenance Minder (MM). For me, the MM say to change oil approx. every 5K miles. Going with that, that's 3x per year or approx. 10 times over 50K miles.

Not sure how much the dealer charges for oil changes, but let's say they're $40. $40 x 10 = $400

$750 car care plan - $400 oil changes = $350

Other maintenance that the MM may say you'll need over 50K:

- air filter and cabin filter change... Say each part is $20 and the MM will say to change them out twice over 50K. Approx. $80
- rotate tires at every oil change.... Say the dealer normally charges $10 - $15. $10 - $15 x 10 = $100 - $150
- owners manual says to replace brake fluid every 3 years, regardless of what the MM says. Dealers charge anywhere from $75-$100. Say's it's $100

That's another $280 - $330 in services.

$350 - $330 = $20

So for $750, it looks like it will pay for itself... unless you drive less than 15K per year, you move out of the area during the next 4 years, or you won't have the car anymore at some point during those 4 years/50K.

Thank for that info shawn & namegoeshere.

I think I'm going to stick with what I have for now. I'm satisfied with the actual price of the car and I'm OK with the warranty situation. I explained things a bit to my wife and she understands there might be small claims stuff I can just take care of myself. We will just have to evaluate things as they come up. The fact that it is potentially refundable AND this is a very reliable car make it a "reasonable" investment. Hopefully FWS can just hold my money for me for a bit If it all works out that $1,800 can just go towards the next down payment right?

While the prepaid maintenance stuff might be cutting it close there is a bit of value in having someone else do it for me, ya know? While it's not hard sometimes oil changes ****, filters get stuck, etc. Eh, now it's not my problem!

Going to put all this to rest now. Thanks to everyone for your advice. I might go a different direction next car purchase, HondaCare will certainly be something I look into.

My next task is to convince my wife that we need to start modding her car

FYI, the "finance manager" is just as much "salesman" as the salespeople. They also make commissions on selling you things like: extended warranty, gap insurance, maintenance contracts, higher interest rates than one qualifies for, processing fees, etc.

A lot of newbies get taken to the cleaners in the finance room, because they let their guard down.

Here's a good page to read, even if it is a bit dated.
http://www.carbuyingtips.com/car6.htm

I know someone that got taken to the cleaners in the finance room recently on a Scion xB, trading in a 3 year old car, buying every maintenance plan, contract, rustproofing, you name it, they bought it. I believe they ended up paying over $26,000 for that $19,000 car.

That's fine, doesn't change the fact that the finance manager did NOT lie to me about it being a refundable warranty as another member(s) had indicated. It's right on the contract in plain English.

I'm fully aware that from the time I walk in until I walk out that every person I come in contact with at a dealer is just looking to pad their wallets, it's obviously their job. Every phone call I take at work is a potential sale, and I do what I can to make it just the same as them.

But if I have a refundable warranty, an optional car care plan that's basically a wash as it will most likely even out with what I paid (so lets say I "pre-paid" my maintenance), and a exterior/interior protection on the car that has a 5 year warranty against any sort of fading, etc. did I really get that bad of a deal? I think not.

What was the price before tax, title and license?

I have searched and searched the internet and can't find much info on the honda financing specials - what is 'well qualified'? My credit scores are mid 600s (640-650) good history on my current auto loan, good employment history. Do I have any chance?

We are looking at an EX - currently 21,995 + 499 doc fee +TTL; includes a 7yr/100k warranty provided by dealer on all new Hondas. But I think they should be able to do a little better.

Look Here "Well qualified" is probably ~720+ for Honda.

Bottom right hand of the main page under current offers.

Picked up a 2012 i4 EX-L 4d for $22,586 +TTL and BS doc fee of $279 in Central Mass. Dealer had to source the car to get the color I wanted, but, I got the color I wanted. I'm happy with the deal and that's all that matters!

Just got a '12 EX-L Coupe V6 6spd last week. Before tax, tags, etc. I paid $27,000 + $1,635 for the extended warranty to 120,000 miles. I think I made out pretty good in the deal...
