They kept it on the trans am as the 60s and 70s were known for it and wanted to keep the nostalgia. It also adds into the design and look of the car. A lot of manufactures dont actually use it anymore because it increases aerodynamic drag which outweighs any performance increase. They often design intake systems to be more like intake runners (a lot of new cars have specially designed flaps in the intake that open kind of like the throttle plate to mimic intake runners) and **** up the coolest air possible from the factory to begin with.

If you notice on the new k-series engines compared to b-series or d-series the intake is in the front of the car now which means cooler air, cooler engine, and cooler a/c as opposed to the exhaust side being in the front of the engine compartment. The downfall is that more installation is needed near the firewall to prevent the inside cabin from becoming as hot.
Thanks for the insight I wont be adding something like this then. No my question is should I use a k and n drop in or a drop in AFE paper filter?

My suggestion I made to you will get you way more gains than a drop in filter. But then again I heard those get you 13whp

I will stick with a drop in but oiled or paper? AFE makes a paper drop in for performance and then theres k and n oiled filter

Dude...live a little. The stock intake system is restrictive as it is. Get a cold air intake or upgrade the throttle body and get a 3.5-4" custom intake. I guarantee you, you will feel a difference. A drop in filter will only give you sound. Sound doesn't always equal performance gains.

I have had my cold air intake and my car is slammed to the ground with the filter being literally 3" off the ground (bumper taken off). And I also have a climate with occasional hard rain and hurricanes. I've been through them all...so what I'm trying to say is don't waste your time and money on nick-nack stuff just because some kid on here claimed 13whp. Get a real intake system. Just my .02. If you still don't wanna consider my suggestion then get a paper filter. The oiled filter requires more maintenance.
