Burning oil

I have a 2009 EX V6. I have less than thirty thousand miles and I am the original owner. I have started to burn oil at the rate of 1/2 quart every 800 miles. What I needed to know was how do I confirm what the service guy said that honda says 2 qts per 1000 is allowable. Does anyone have any idea where I can find that information for my self?

If I remember correctly, I think Honda says 1 qt every 1,000 mile is allowable. Even at that, I still think that's a bit excessive.

If you change oil every 5,000 miles... that about 8.5 qts you'll need to put in before next oil change.

Oil consumption seems to be a pretty common issue with the 8th generation Accord.

You say your the original owner with less than 30k and have started to burn a half quart every 800 miles? Did you burn oil always when the car was new and the problem is getting gradually worse or did you just notice the oil consumption? I had a similar problem in my first 10 thousand kilometres that stopped after my first oil change. There is an oil additive in new cars so just wondering if you remember when you did your first oil change or how hard you drove it from day one?

I didn't notice it until this last spring I was getting an error code which apparently for the ECO not working properly. They knew that this was because of low oil. now that I have been aware I check it every 1000 miles which led me to put 3/4 quart Saturday. I was planning to go back and ask a different advisor about what is the acceptable limit?

Thanks for the links to the potential lawsuit they were very informative.

If I were having the problem I'd just do the ye-olde small claims court. Sue for $5k for an engine rebuild...Honda would probably settle just to avoid the publicity of it. No judge would take "1 qt / 1000 mi = normal" argument seriously.

Didn't you check your oil at all from new? If not you could have been driving on low oil and done some damage.

I'm very curious what oil you have been using in the car? I've seen way too many people using Mobil 1 or some other synthetic from day 1, and then after a while, the engine would start using oil? What oil and weight have you been using? How often do you change your oil?

NOTE: I'm not blaming or pointing fault at you, I'm just compiling information.

Once you have completed you're lawsuit,

May i suggest lucas oil additive to help alleviate that oil consumption, although used on older hondas it will stop that slow burn off of oil.

Only a suggestion.

Did you ask them to update PGM-FI software? It is on TSB 11-033.

+1. I had a similar problem on my '09 EX-L V6. The oil consumption problem was greatly improved after TSB 11-033 was done; it also mostly fixed the ECO surge/hesitation issues.

See the thread below for details.

I don't know, I didn't observe the update being performed.
