IMHO, the starting thread, "went to autozone" is the main reason why we in the service industry see such problems.

free scanning by a person who is barely qualified to be flipping burgers is just WRONG!

I'm surprised they didn't try and sell you something. but since their cheapo scanner doesn't tell them what part "should" be changed, they couldn't.

Sorry about the rant, it's been a bad day, had several run-ins with people that just don't understand that the code doesn't always point to what is wrong. It's only a START. Sometimes you need to pay for PROPER diagnosis.

Freddie- What's the harm in a free scan? Could have just been a very simple problem with an easy corrective action. Don't know until you try. Now resume flipping your burgers.

This is what the harm is.... at least to people like me who have to deal with people who go to AZ for the free scans...

Most if not all people automatically think that the code that is read is a magic silver bullet to fix their car. This isn't the case. when you try and explain to someone that the car needs to be diagnosed and re-scanned, not just for a code, but for actual data AND they have to pay for it.... all hell breaks loose.

The number of people we see is increasing, whether it's because it's free or not. We've now taken steps to cover ourselves when bs like this comes in the door.

If you've gone to whomever or wherever for "diagnosis" and say this is the code I have, you're first asked do you want it properly diagnosed? If the answer is "no, just replace the part, please". Fine, we'll replace whatever part they want, even if they bring it (at a SUBSTANTIAL labor charge) and you get no guarantee that it will fix it.

When it comes back, and so far more than 70% have come back, then they end up pissed off. We tell them "go back to whoever diag'ed it in the first place" We only did what you wanted. If you want it fixed properly, then you will have to PAY for proper diagnosis.

You just can't fix stupid.

(btw, somedays I'd like nothing more than to be flipping burgers )

My prince said "amen"!

What's even worse is when your service writer doesn't bother to tell the car's owner that just replacing the part may have a low chance of fixing it. So then the customer is under the impression that "they said it would fix it".

Around here we call it being thrown under the bus..... since the TSI will go down with an upset customer.

The code given is where to start poking around. It's not the cure, it's a symptom. I try to pass on to y'all the most common cause AND the list of other things. Sometimes there's something that's gone out in the specific year & model & it's pretty easy to say it THIS. Other times it's not & without a hands on diagnosis it's near impossible.

Getting a "free" code read beats nothing. Sometimes it's enough to get pointed in the right direction. I don't know about other cars, but Hondas are fairly consistant. Luckily. But then you get one like Greg-ster's & even with hands on it's a pain!!!

So continue to get the code, but don't expect it to be the miracle cure. With it, I can give you the possibilities.
