Does my tire look bad?

Is this how my tire is supposed to look? You suppose I should replace it relatively soon? LOL

On a more serious note - could it be alignment? Don't think my car has even been in an accident because I know my paint is hard to match and it looks very very good, so I'm thinking it's all factory or was a very expensive job.

Question Lots of questions

What does the opposite side look like? What I'm saying is does the other side look like this? Need to see both sides b/c it can make a difference if only one side is doing this. What tires are you using? Do all 4 tires match?

How often do you rotate? What pattern do you use to rotate the tires? What cold psi do you run in the tires? Any racing? Tires ever patched? What is the current tread depth? Lots of variation in the depth?

Opposite side looks pretty worn, but at least not that bad. Still can see the invidual tread blocks. All 4 tires match. These are Yokohama A550H tires, previous owner installed them. They were not balanced correctly, all 4 wheels had Honda weights on them but they were installed at Sears. When I balanced them, they were off by combined 3-4 ounces per wheel.

I rotated them when I got it and since have put about 7000 miles on them. This tire is now in back, previously was in front. Fronts still have a lot of tread left so I assume they were not rotated correctly before. I rotated them front to back, same side, because they're directional. Cold PSI I keep it above 32 at all times, 36-38PSI for long trips (fuel economy reasons). No racing on my part, no patches that I know of. Like I said front 2 still have lots of life left, rear 2 are pretty bad. This is the worse of the 2 examples.

Forgot to mention this is the right rear tire currently.

Hey Benji... 1st I moved this to Wheels and tires in The Lab... sure you already noticed....

It's hard to tell without seeing the completely across tread

But from the wear on most 6th Gens it looks pretty normal,
I noticed the tire is starting to crack from your photo also...
Balance can contribute to that kind of wear and once it starts it is very hard to stop.... Whats the tread depth on the center grooves? How much is left on fronts?? I have noticed that different tire brands and series in those brands have different wear characteristics on different vehicles..
I am not being cute but that tire would not be on my car for the simple fact(SAFETY) !!!!You need to be shopping for some new ones.
You need to invest 5 bucks for a tread depth gauge to keep an eye on tread depth and when to rotate..
Your safety is worth alot more than 400.00 and you would notice improved handling and ride quality with a new set..

Get back with us on the others so we can see where you stand...
You know me, I'm going to give you an opinion and not B.S. you and neither will benjamming!!!!!

It's simply the alignment. Too much toe-out. You should be seeing steel belts soon.

I just went to get the tires changed tonight, so I don't know how much tread is left. I can say that on the fronts, I looked at them and I couldn't really justify replacing them. They looked good, had a good amount of tread left, maybe 30%. On that specific rear tire in the picture, I checked it with a penny, it's way below the guy's head all the way across, but can still see the tread. Yeah...if it were my money that tire wouldn't be on my car either. But my dad wouldn't believe me even after he saw the picture. He went out to look at the tire in the morning and couldn't find it (blind as hell) so he said I used photoshop. Then I went downstairs and found it in 3 seconds and he agreed to replace all the tires. If I'd been allowed to spend my own money I would have replaced the tires nearly a year ago.

glad to hear you got new tires!!! you really needed them!

sounds like my dad! i don't know how many times when we were growing up my mom would complain about how mushy the brakes felt in a car or how the car was making a "funny sound" or "strange smell". my dad would say she was nuts basically! (and the end result would be that the master cylinder was bad or the engine was burning oil, or whatever.) but he'd neglect it for so long because he didn't "see" the problem! funny thing is, he really does know alot about cars! i think it was always a matter of he didn't want to admit my mom noticed something that he didn't notice.

So Benji...what kind of tires did you end up with? Were you forced to compromise since Dad was paying the bill, or did you have some say in the matter?

Well, I could have just asked a friend or looked it up, but didn't think it'd make a huge different, ya know?

No actually no compromises at all. I ended up with Michelin X-Radial DT's from Costco. They're an 80,000 mile tire, said to have a smooth/quiet ride (better than my old pair but not a whole lot, like I mentioned). I got more than I bargained for, I was actually going to order some Yokohama AVS dB S2's for $71 each but instead got these things for $92 each plus my dad even paid to get them installed and balanced! I was just going to do that myself in Auto class at school but hey got it done for $10 a tire so why not.

The Michelin X radials are available from our local Sam's also. If I remember correctly, they're "S" rated. Our '01 came with "H" rated Michelins.

So if that's the case, keep it under 112mph Benji

I think the only way Benji's car will see close to 100mph would be on the back of a speeding rollback
