Check Fuel Cap Warning Message

My car just started to flash "check fuel cap" message on the little window where outside temperature is displayed. I thought maybe it was loose. But when I checked it, it was tight. I opened it and closed it again with several clicks to just make sure hoping the message would go away. No such luck. It's still flashing the warning.

Has anyone had this issue before?

A lot of times it'll go out after a little bit of driving or a couple of starts.

If its still flashing, then you might have a faulty gas cap or a bad purge valve (seen these problems on my old Mazda3).

Happened to me one night, tightened the cap and in the morning, the message was gone.

i've also read that the message can pop up if the tank is overfilled - that is, if you continue to top it off too much after the gas pump "clicks off" indicating full...did you recently fill-up?

I filled up few days ago and I didn't overfill. It was fine until today. So far, after the msg popped up, I had 3 restarts and the message is still flashing. Will wait couple of days to see if it goes away but if not I'll take it in for service.

I thought I bought Honda to avoid these kinds of little issues.

Happened to me three times now. Dealer looked at it and could find nothing wrong. They said they "lubed" it. Not sure what the hell that implies. But after several new starts the code will clear itself.

You could always disconnect and then re-connect the battery, too. It should clear the code. Make sure you have your radio code handy.

I had the same problem on my EX Coupe. I would get the message, check the cap, and it was always tight. I would take it off anyway, put it back on again, and tighten it again. The message would sometimes go away, but inevitably it would come back. Finally, I went to the dealer, where they "checked and lubed it". Same as before. After a few weeks of this, I ended up buying the plastic clip, and the gas cap myself from the Parts Dept. for $22, and changed it myself in all of two minutes. Never had the problem again. I could've had it replaced under warranty, but I felt the $22 more then covered the multiple trips and hours waiting at the dealership so that it could be "checked and re-lubed" before finally having it replaced anyway. The msg finally disappeared today. If it happens again, I will go to the dealer and ask them to replace the cap. Most likely though, they won't do it unless it becomes a recurring issue.

WTH!!!!!!!!!!

This stupid message came back today out of the blue. Last time it happened, it disappeared the next morning. Today, it disappeared after third restart.

Why is this keep happening? I always make sure to turn the cap until it clicks after each refuel. Do you guys ever experience this?

Just happened to me the other day for the first time. My O.C.D. makes sure I turn it 4-5 clicks every time (don't ask) so I took it off, re tightened it and the warning turned off. Hope this isn't another in the long line of american-made quality control issues. No offence to the american visitors here, but maybe my sights were set too high with my RSX which came off the boat from Japan. 6yrs, not a single issue. Not a single creak, rattle, nothing. With my 6mo old Accord EX-L V6 I've been into the shop about 11x for various (albeit minor, but annoying) quality control issues.

This has happened on my wifes Honda Pilot before a couple of times. The manual says to make sure the cap is tight so you hear it click at least 3 times. It also says it can take a couple of days for the light to turn off. As mentioned before it could also be a faulty fuel cap. We make sure the cap is nice and tight and havent had an issue again since.
