RPM at 55 MPH (American Honda Accord 2 Door V6)

Hey. I know this has probably been brought up before, but I haven't come across it yet. I haven't really payed attention, but I recently got a 2002 Honda Accord V6 Coupe. The car is in perfect shape, and it runs perfect. But to get to the question, what should it cruise at going at 55 MPH? It's currently cruising at around 1800 1900 RPM going a constant 55 MPH with the cruise set, or without the cruise set. Is this normal, or should it be lower? My old car was cruising at around 1600, that's why I was asking. Will the higher RPM hurt my gas mileage? Thanks!

hmm, I can check tomorrow but mine usually does 2,100 at 65mph (02 V6 sedan).

Sounds about right. 1600 sounds like what a car with a big displacement and high torque engine would do at that speed. Hondas are not like that, they rev a little higher.

My guess your other car was some GM type? They usually make much more torque down low and thus can rev lower while cruising down the road.

I am also guessing that OP hadn't owned any small engine 4 bangers for those the rpm at that speed may be above 2500 so 1900 wouldn't seem alarming at all

Yup. I did own a GM before. Haha. How'd you guess?

And thanks you guys. Your all alot of help. I was starting to get worried. I'm slowly learning about the difference in Honda's.

Also, is it normal for it to cruise 65 at around 2200 - 2300?

Test Conditions:
Car, AT in OD, in 4th gear, Accord 2001-Ex (windows up, AC off).
RPM is from ScanGage2 (from OBD-2 DLC) , and is rounded up to nearest 10 RPM.
Speed, is from GPS (SG2 is withing 1 MPH or less) Speedo is fast by approx. 3 MPH).
Tires, 195-65-15 Michelin's (Pilot Altos?), and are almost worn-out.

MPH..RPM
55..2130
65..2500
70..2700

Here are my general RPMs in my 2007 EX I4 auto tranny:

50mph = 1600ish RPMs
55mph = 1800ish RPMs
60mph = 2000ish RPMs
65mph = 2200ish RPMs
70mph = 2400ish RPMs

In general once I'm in 5th gear at 50mph, the RPMs increase by about 200 for every five mph increase.

I have an 02 V6 coupe and am at the same RPM that you are at 55.

Btw, 1600 at 55 mph is what my Malibu does, it is a pretty tall gearing.
