Other Honda wheels on an '05 Accord...

Hi - new to this forum, but not to Hondas. Owned acuras and hondas over the years, and currently own a 04 Civic EX coupe (son at college), an 04 Pilot EX-L/RES (wifes), and my recently purchased 05 Accord LX sedan (replaced my real bitchin' Pontiac Aztek - don't say anything. :-) ).

Anyway, buying an LX was the right financial move, but I'm looking at getting a set of alloys to use for the OEM Michelin 15" rubber, and then save the steel wheels/hubcaps for snow tires (live in NH). So, going with a 15" alloy wheel is the plan. I've seen a few aftermarket wheels that are nice, and the accessory wheels for the Accord have a cople that'd be good.

But another option seems to be accessory and/or take-off wheels from another Honda product. All seem to have the 114.3mm bolt spacing and similar center hub size. Only difference seems to be wheel width. Older accords have 6" wheel width, and the CR-V's have the same width. Newer Accords (like mine) have a 6.5" wheel width - all other dimensions seem to be the same.

So - long story short - anyone ever run, say, a CR-V wheel on a newer accord, or see of any problems? Would run stock tire size....

How about some EX V6 wheels?

I will probably sell mine in about 6 months when I need new tires (bought TSX 17" wheels).

The only problem is the V6 wheels are 16".

The only alloy from the older Accord that will work is the 98-02 EX V6, specifically the straight 5-spoke. The 98-02 I4's were 4 lug and all I4/V6 Accord before 98-02 were 4 lugs as well. Alloys from all other 5 lug Honda cars will work EXCEPT the new Odyssey - its 5x120 vs. all others 5x114.3. It's fine to run a 205 width tire on a 6" wide wheel, that's what I'm doing on my Accord (but it has 4 lug wheels). I don't think you're going to find any 6" wide 5 lug wheels though.

Look into take off wheels from the 7th gen EX/EX V6, a lot of them will come with tires and they should be getting abundant because people are taking them off immediately to replace them with chrome wheels. Alloys from other 5 lug Hondas tend to be more popular in 16" or 17" sizes I think - TSX, TL/Type-S, RSX, CL, 97+ Prelude, Odyssey, Pilot, etc are all 16 or 17.

Thanks for the replies. Specifically, I found a couple of deals for accessory CR-V wheels that were 15x6 that looked pretty nice, and the cost was pretty reasonable. Didn't pull the trigger just yet, but will try to do so sometime this summer (at least before the fall when I need the steels for snow tires). Again, I'd like to stick with the 15" wheels to use the existing Michelins, and keep the cost down a bit for replacement tires in the future

If I were to stumble on a real good deal for take-off 16" EX wheels/tires, I might be tempted.... :-)

OK - have a couple of choices here for some alloys for my '05 Accord LX:

- Set of 15x6 new CR-V alloys
- Set of 15x6.5 take-off wheels from a mid-90's Legend (stored in a warehouse for years)
- Set of 15x6.5 aftermarket wheels from tires.com

All 3 are at a great price, and am leaning towards the CR-V wheels, if I can feel comfortable that a 6" wide wheel will be OK. Gonna mount the factory Michelins on these, and save the steel wheels/hubcaps for my snow tires.

Would go with the CR-V wheels. Aftermarket is probably not the best way to go.

I'm going through the exact same decision process and also have a new LX accord.

One other option you might consider (that I'm also looking at) is at www.tirerack.com . They have a nice looking Sport Edition D5 wheel in 15x6.5, and with brand new kuhmo hp4 716 tires for <$500. The wheel looks almost like an oem wheel, and they are very light (LP Cast).

Wheels only are <$300!

I looked at the 15" wheels from TireRack, and they look ok. But if you go to www.tires.com, they have a larger selection of wheels for the Accord, including a line of wheels under the "Rage" name. The 4 they have in 15" sizes are $77 and $80 per wheel with free shipping and look pretty nice. As always with aftermarket wheels, you need to make sure you get hub centering rings to make sure the wheel fits snugly on the hub so you don't get any vibrations, etc.

Anyone on the board gotten aftermarket wheels for their Accord (with the centering rings), and have these worked well in terms of smoothness, same handling, etc?

I actually bought some wheels for my last car from tirerack and they required hub-centric rings (was quite disappointed that the wheel was not bored to the actual hub-size, but I assume the wheel fits multiple cars that way). The hub-rings were plastic, but seemed "ok" at holding the wheel centered while the lugs are torqued. I did have some subtle freeway vibration over 65, but I think it was due to improper balancing. I sold the car before having them rebalanced, so I can't really say for sure.
If you go aftermarket, I'd recommend getting a honda-bored wheel, or one that you can use metal hub-rings for... the plastic doesn't instill confidence!

As part of my over-zealous research on wheels for the 05 Accord, I found that not all Honda 5-lug wheels are the same. The 05 Accord has a 5-lug 114.3mm pattern - but the center bore is 70.3mm (meaning how big the center hub is in diameter). Very few Honda wheels have this dimension - only the mid 90's Legend, a couple of Hondas, and the Pilot/MDX have this dimension. The CR-V, Acura TL/CL have 64.1mm center bores. Meaning if you get one of these wheels to put on an Accord, it won't fit unless you bore each wheel to a larger center hole......

Also, on aftermarket wheels, direct tire (tires.com) includes metal hub centering rings with each wheel, so that should be better than the plastic (I had some of those once on anoher set of wheels about 10 years ago).

So - Still not sure of my decision, but I'll let folks know what I end up with.

First - where do I live - I live in Merrimack, which is 1/2 way between Nashua and Manchester - southern part of the state - lived here for 37 years after moving from the midwest when I was a kid.

So I pulled the trigger on some wheels today. Ordered a set of Rage Coda wheels from direct tire. here's the link:

They're not typical or similar to what you'd get on an Accord - I wanted something different and not expensive. The polished lip should stand out pretty well with the other chrome accents on the car. They were 80 bucks a pop with free shipping and hub centering rings. I'll let folks know how they turn out.

I ended up getting some '05 EX V6 wheels/tires locally, and was able to get $200 for my stock steelies since they only had 100 miles on 'em .

I'm gonna stick with the OEM Michelin's. They ride real smooth and handle fine for my driving - so I'll be putting those on the new wheels when they arrive, then I save the steel wheels and hubcaps for the winter when I'll mount a set of studded snow tires. Yep, I live in the snow belt and drive down lots of dirt roads, so I need 2 sets of wheels/tires to get me thru a year. That's why I went with the 15" wheels so I could continue to use the tires. Making the switch to a full wheel/tire combo would have been a bit of overkill for my plans.
