Weird sound when starting up.

I have an '08 EX Sedan, 5-speed manual. Every morning, or after getting off of work, I'll crank the engine then it makes a grinding sound. It sounds similar when missing gears, but not as loud. It doesn't happen when starting and cutting off the engine after quick stops, here and there. I also notice that it only happens when it's really cold. The car runs fine though, and doesn't make any noise when driving. Has anyone ever come across this?

I've heard this is normal... My moms Honda Pilot does this. Also my cousins Acura CL type s and also 2 of my friends acura tl (first and second gen). Something with tranny i think. Don't hear it on my car tho.

I'm contemplating on bringing it in, but a little hesitant because it seems to be a common thing. I'm just hoping it doesn't lead to anything big particularly on the day after my warranty expires.

Same with me, don't worry about it. The dealer won't do anything about it either.

That's probably the unexplained noise I heard when starting my car in 25 weather after sitting outside for the first time (trip), but I have 6MT, so it's not the tranny. And not an I4-only trait either, since a few respondents have V6s. So what is it???? By the way, it's probably related to the same sound these engines make when shutting them off. I'm not worried about it all, but would like to know what is it. Good day gang.

*bump*

My car does this as well, is it just related to the weather then? Should I have any reason to be concerned?

In some other thread I read it was the VTC solenoid or something like that?

No. If you leave your AC on when you shut the car off, the AC compressor will not begin operation until after the engine has already started and is running at idle, or about 5 seconds after the engine has started.

We can rule out the AC compressor.

Is it somewhere between a rattle and a grind? If so, it appears common unfortunately. There are several threads on here about it. I have an 09 I4 coupe and have had the VTC actuator replaced twice; according to Honda the VTC actuator is faulty causing the noise. Thus far, the best advice (which I got on here) I've had is to use a thinner oil. Good luck.
