Hey guys,
Just wanted to share how I was able to silence my creaking headliner. I don't know if it'll work for your car, but it did for mine. First off, I have an 03 V6 Coupe w/ moonroof and overhead maplights/homelink. My headliner would creak when I drove over bumps in the area behind the sunvisor and the area between the moonroof opening and sunglass holder.
With the moonroof open, I started at the center and with both hands, slowly started pulling back the edge of the headliner at the front of the moonroof opening.
The edge of the headliner sits in a metal groove. I pulled the headliner edge out of the groove.
If you're able to insert your finger between the headliner and metal groove then you're doing it right.
Work your way out of the center to the sides of the moonroof opening.
Here's the catch. There will be a small gap as you can see here. I'm fine with it.
This is the view from the driver's seat. I can't see the gap so I'm happy with it.
How did doing this fix the creaks? I don't know. My only guess is the headliner is a real snug fit and any slight movement would cause friction between the headliner and frame. Now that the two pieces aren't rubbing against each other, no more creaks. If you decide to try this, I hope it works as well for you as it did for me.
