Tire recommendations

For a stock Accord, looking for ride comfort and quiet. Looking at my old standard Michelin MXV4, thinking about the Pirelli P4000 and possibly the Bridgestone Potenza. What have been your findings?

Stay away from anything Pirelli, they tend to wear too fast. Remember that if you're looking for ride quality, that you're going to compromise performance.

For ride and wear, the best choice is the Michelin Symmetry. It's got a very soft sidewall and hard tread surface, which means that it will ride and wear very well. As impulse said, though, it won't be a speed rated tire.

Thanks for the info guys. Yes, I'm looking for stock nice ride and good tire life. If I want performance, I'll get on my Suzuki Hayabusa shod with Metzeler Rennsports.

I had Yokohama Avids on my '95 Accord until some idiot sent it to the graveyard and me to the hospital. They were amazing, probably not quite as smooth as the Michelin Symmetry, but the performance was definitely good.

I've had much success purchasing from "the tire rack". Their salespeople are well trained and very knowlegable. Also, their website www.tirerack.com is very helpful with comparing tires.

I replaced my '98 Accord tires at 53,000 with Bridgestone RE910's. I currently have 37,000 miles on them and have been very satisfied. The are quieter than the original Michelin's and are much better at resisting hydroplaning. The sidewalls are softer so the ride is better but the handling is not as sharp so I increased tire pressure 2-3 psi to compensate. I would buy them again.

I got 81K miles from my MXV4+'s before replacing 2 of them (at the wear bar). The other 2 are still on the car. For better wet traction, handling, and a quieter ride than the OEM Michelins (especially on rough concrete), I replaced the front 2 with Bridgestone Turanza LS-H. The Michelins were noisy on concrete and had poor wet traction from day 1.

In about 10K, I'll replace the other two.

BTW, I've read the Potenza RE950's have even better handling, but at the cost of road noise.

And Tirerack is the place to go for info.

Another nice thing about Bridgestone/Firestone ..

Michelin X-One, Yokohama AVS dB S2. I have experience with the Michelin X-Radial, the X-One's cousin. It lasts pretty long and is pretty responsive, ride isn't bad and pretty quiet too. Did I mention the X-One has a 80K treadwear warranty? People on the Odyssey forums are telling me the Symmetry sucks, loud and very very fast wearing. The Turanza LS-H is the top rated tire in it's class I think, I might give that a look but I tend to go away from Bridgestone.

Yes those are both good tires... But not rated very well for snow
traction....
I know alot of people shy away from B/F due to Ford incident,
it's amazing how quite they have kept the cases against Ford w/Michelin & Dunlop.

Wardsweb lives in Texas, I live in CA. What's snow? Actually I would tend to think the X-One/X-Radial would be good for snow because it has a lot of sipes. Don't know, never tried them in severe snow. In severe rain they're okay.

You can't always trust comparisons on tire rack. The BFG KDW SSS is a performance tire and it got 9.1 in noise rating. Could be because most of the people who buy these tires probably don't care, or the exhaust has droned out the noise. Same kind of thing with snow. There's always those idiots out there who go "man these tires suck in snow compared to my snow tire, FAIL." I try not to weigh those ratings too heavily. I'm in the market for new tires and I took the ratings into consideration, but I consider them invalid if I find a friend who can tell me otherwise. Has happened for a few tires already. I was considering the Continentals but not anymore, I forgot why. Something like they didn't have my size, too expensive, or I thought they would wear too fast. Wear is another one of those things where idiots commonly screw up They have bad alignment and when the tire goes bald after 5,000 miles they go bash it all the way.

We had 2 sets of Potenzas & they went 100K on both cars they were on! They rode nice too. We also had Turanzas & were happy with them too. We have leaned toward Bridgstone for a long time now. There's likely better priced, better feel & better wear.....but we found happiness in all 3 areas. A well rounded tire! (couldn't help myself!!)
