Gear kick In Reverse When Cold...

Sup Guys,

I have a 2000 EX Sedan. For some reason when the car is cold and i put it in reverse the gear doesnt immidiately kick in gear. It kicks in after a second. I dont have the problem when i place it back on drive after having it in reverse and i dont have the problem when the car is already warmed up. This only happens when its cold. Anyone else have this problem? I thought maybe a motor mount, but wasnt sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How many miles on it and do you regularly drain and fill the transmission with Honda Z-1?

Not good. If you do a panic stop, what does the trans do? Does it neutral out then thump about a half second later?

If the engagement to reverse is harsh when it does catch, the trans is having a hard time building line pressure. Really not good.

SatinSilver, I havent changed the Transmission fluid as of yet. I purchased the car a few months ago. I did notice upon checking the fluid that it appears overfilled.

Fredsvt, if i do a panic stop nothing irregular happens, it doesnt neutrol out then thump a half second later.

The gears shift perfectly when im driving, it only happens when the car is cold and i place it in reverse, it kicks in about a half second later. However, it doenst do it when the car is warm.

I thought perhaps it might be a motor mount.

I4 or V6?

Get the fluid at the correct level. On the I4 you can loosen the drain plug just enough (don't remove it) to let some fluid out with all wheels on the ground. Or you could do it right by performing a full drain/refill with Honda ATF.

V6, I cant be sure if the previous owner drained it. At what mileage is it scheduled to be drained? Maybe i should just have it drained.

Thats good...to answer your previous question you should do a drain and fill with Honda Z-1 every 30k max. If you do mostly city miles then prob. every 15k. Some people will do 3 drain and fills with a few miles in btwn to really clean things up. Lots of different opinions on the frequency. City miles will really chew up the atf pretty well.

Usually when they delay, then "thump" into reverse, the transmission isn't building pressure fast enough. The 98 V6 here doesn't delay. How long do you let it run before putting it in reverse when cold?

Since yours is a V6, I haven't had the opportunity to panic brake one, as the ones I've had that have failed have just about died completely and any abuse isn't something to do to them.

The 4 cylinders always neutral out and then "thump" back into 1st on a panic brake when they do as yours does in reverse.

Since you don't know what fluid or when it was changed, doing a 3x drain and fill may help it. Some of the fluid that some places puts in is more viscous than Z1, and if it's slightly more viscous than Z1 when cold, it may make it delay.

The motor mount that most commonly goes bad is the front one near the radiator. If you take off from a stop at a moderate to strong pace, do you feel a thump from the car immediately after hitting the accelerator?
