strange idle?

Adding to the bad juju surrounding my accord, after driving, when I shift back into park, the revs climb from 1k to 1400, then drop, climb from 1k to 1400 then drop ad infinitum... any ideas? My thought is IAC or something of that ilk, but I have no idea how to diagnose.

As always, all help appreciated,

(PS the ride back from Penn. was 13 hours... luckily 8 hours of that was cloudy... the other 5 was sweaty... ugh..)

Has the throttle body/IACV been cleaned recently?

you don't say... guess what, my PCV valve has been dumping oil out the top of the valve cover... here's hoping that really is the problem... (now just to get that fan motor)...

Well i don't think it (replacing the PCV Valve) solved it... but now that I have the new blower motor in (yay!) and the a/c back on as a result, I've noticed that it only happens when the A/C is off... which is to say that I normally have it on, so this could have been like this forever...

hmmm

ummmm, that would be a vacuume leak....but no clue what it is caused by...

Sorry to say, we won't be around here for a couple of weeks to help you figure this one out..... in less than 12 hours now....we'll be on the plane to HI. In fact, since we have to get up at 3am, bedtime is comin' soon!

Hopefully someone else can help with it.

Try pulling off the intake hose to the throttle body(with the car off). open the throttle plate and feel inside with your finger.. Do you feel a ridge of carbon? Shine a light and look. that can cause erratic idle. If you have the much carbon buildup near the throttle plate, I would 1st decarbonize the intake chamber w/ a BG Induction Service...

2nd, check the range of the IAC. I believe it should be on the throttlebody assy, or nearby. SHould have 5 volts to it. If it's not pulling 5volts, it may be a sensor or ecm problem. You'd have to troubleshoot it from there.

If the IAC is in range, you could have a vac leak somewhere also... Hope this helps...

Talking Woot!

once again... problem solved!

Original problem:
surging in Park, between 1300 and 1800 rpm... occurs regardless of A/C on or off, blower fan etc...

Solution:
The top left Fast Idle Valve mounting bolt was loose by about 1/3rd inch. (Yes it was sticking out of the valve body...)

Tightened up the bolt, reset the idle using the idle speed screw...

a few check engine lights later (forgot to reconnect EACV/IAC)

voila! problem solved!

now to go get a lead pipe to beat my mechanic with...
