I've been more than happy with my Magellan Roadmate 1470. I do wish that I'd have gotten the version with integrated traffic, since mine only has the option to add a receiver for it. You can't go wrong with it for $180 + tax and shipping from Amazon.com

I highly recommend getting a unit that has text to speech even if you have to spend a little more. I have a relatively cheap Garmin with text to speech that I just stick in my center console cup holder. I almost never have to look at it (and you wouldn't really want to look down there!) and it gets me where I need to go. The prompts including the street names make it a no brainer from my limited experience. I don't know models or brands, but i really believe that text to speech is a worthwhile feature.

Garmin all the way. I have the Nuvi 760 and love it. Everyone I know has the Garmin and they all love them.

I have a fairly new Magellan Roadmate 1340 from Costco for around $100. It has lane guidance, text to speech, and is small and thin (what I was looking for). It works great and I have no complaints, however it takes some getting used to. I think the Garmin's are a bit easier for the unfamiliar to use IMO.

Visit this page ...

http://www.consumersearch.com/auto-gps

Consumer Search consolidates the ratings from a lot of other sources, including Consumer Reports and the major car magazines, and one of the things they did this for was GPS units. FYI, Garmin does hold three out of four of their best GPS units, mostly it's about how much you're willing to spend as to which Garmin is best.

Another vote her for the Garmin. I got a Nuvi 255W on sale earlier this year for under $200. Nothing fancy (no BT, text to speech, etc...) but it's an awesome, solid mapping unit. Comes with maps for all of NA, dozens of languages, comprehensive trip computer, versatile address book/favorites log and more. The mapping logic is very good and it offers north up, heading up, and 3D.

It was cheap because it was an outgoing model and the maps were old. A map upgrade was $60 so I splurged and purchased a *life time* map upgrade subscription for $119. You can download map updates 4x a year as long as you own the device.

Their on line support / updates / extras are great.

I also highly recommend the "bean bag" dash mount. It's essentially a bean bag with a grippy rubber bottom. Sits on the dash no matter what. I've taken curves that have nearly planted the Prelude in cow pastures and the Garmin never moved.

well, i tried the suction cup on the dash, but it kept falling off. so...like a child, i attached it to the screen itself and just wedged a piece of foam on top and on the bottom so it doesn't rip the screen out. it actually looks decent, lol

Garmin Nuvi 255 refurb for $100 at Buy.com . I have two refurbed Garmins and they both work perfectly and looked brand new when I got them. Hell, for $100 I can upgrade in a few years rather than pay $80 for a map update.
