"Legal Investigation" of Accord Rear Brakes

I noticed this morning there is an advertisement on top of the board soliciting Accord owners to provide a California law firm information concerning Accord rear brake problems. Essentially, it's an attempt to recruit clients for a class action law suit.

For the benefit of those who are unfamiliar with class action law suits, the pattern is this: A plaintiffs' firm solicts potential clients for the "class" via notices in newpapers, trade journals, websites and direct "notices" mailed to vehicle owners. The firm then requests a court to "certify" (i.e. recognize) the class and name their firm to represent the class of plaintiffs. They then file a lawsuit, typically claiming millions of dollars in damages. What they really want, of course, is a financial settlement, which is supposed to be divided among the plaintiffs. The problem is that before the lawyers pay any sums to the individuals who made up the class, the law firm typically deducts enormous legal fees and all the costs associated with the suit, up to an including the postage on all correspondence sent the clients. In this manner, the firm makes a great deal of money, and the individual plaintiffs typically get mere pennies on the dollar, if that. It sounds great in the initial soliciation/notification letter (read the ad), but ultimately this sort of legal work is just a nickel shy of a scam created to benefit the lawyers involved.

Yep I can't agree with you more. Class action lawsuits only benefit the gum under the shoe lawyers and not the people that have been suffering the most. I guess money talks as to why these sort of suits have not been outlawed.

Honda will get what they deserve for not attending to a safety issue if that is the way the courts see. The lawyers get filthy rich off of it although they are the least affected by the problem to begin with. Accord owners will likely get a chack in the mail for $0.30. That is how justice in the US works, and I use the term very loosely.

FYI the problem with the rear brakes on 8th gen accords is premature wear, and as such it is not considered a safety issue. Honda still needs to address the problem, however.

The system's not perfect, but it's better than most alternatives at least.

It's not but it will still end up costing Honda money to battle it out in court. Money that should have been spent to hire additional resources to fix the problem quicker.

We shouldn't have these problems so soon. Motor trend even commented on the premature brake issue a few months ago.

It's really embarassing driving on the interstate while my car makes this awful metal grinding sound. It sounds like my wheel is going to fly off.

The last gen had one of these in regards to the Speedometer and Odometer being off by as much as 5%, which could result in your car rolling out of warranty faster then it really did. I got my warranty extended an extra 1K, and a check for $12.00. I traded the car a week later.......

I agree in theroy, a class action is great, you get enough people all in one suit that it gets the manu's attention, however the only one that really makes $$$$ is the Atty and the manu looses money that could have been spent directly fixing the problem with the customer. I'm a little dissapointed with Honda on this one, its a known issue, they should make it right.

........the premature wear issue.........does it pertain to Generations other than VIII?

(My 6M has 70k on OEM factory original pads.....at tire rotation time, the word has always been the same: "Pads OK".........

Should I seek a second opinion?

Great car/strange clutch.

ez....

No ez you're fine, some premature wear on the 7th gen has been reported though.

I'm at 37K on the original pads and shoes. 8 for the front, 4 for the rear. Mind you I have drums in the back and they start out at 5-6, front pads start at 10-12. I think it's mostly an issue with automatics, they tend to ride their brakes. See it every day on the road.

By my calculations, I shouldn't need to replace either of my brakes till at least 70K in the worse case, and closer to 100K in the best case. That is if they continue to wear at the same rate and evenly.
