New Owner with Possible Transmission Problem?
I just purchased a 2003 Accord EX V6 Sedan with 75k on it. The test drive went fine and I am a huge honda fan, since I started driving I've owned a 86 Accord, 88 Accord, 89 Accord, 98 Oasis(same as 1st gen ody), and 99 Oasis(same as 1st gen ody). The tranmission is failing on my 98 at 180k and a lot of abuse. So I purchased this accord to replace it. After I purchased it I started reading up on the problems these have with tranny's and now I am concerned. I purchased it only 4 days ago and now on my way in to work it seemed to slip between either 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 3rd. I wasn't paying that much attention to the shifting until the RPM's shot way up (5k) and it wouldn't shift until I took my foot off the gas. I called the dealership where I purchased it and they are going to look at it and give me a loaner while they check it out, the problem is I probably drove 200miles in the last 4 days and it has only happened once for me. I'm afraid they won't be able to reproduce the problem and I'll be stuck with a failing tranny. I bought the car used from a Volvo dealership, so that has me a little worried as well since this won't be a Honda mechanic looking at the problem. Any insight on this issued would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, James |

When you pick the car back up from the dealer make sure they give you an invoice that "documents" the problem. That way if it conks out in a few weeks you have a record. I doubt the dealer wants to have their name tarnished.
If they give you the run around down the road call your local tv station and talk to their investigative reporter. Guess we know why the car was traded in.

Well, if you bought it AS IS with no warranty I think you will be SOL. Sorry
![]() You gotta do the research before buying. See if you can trade them for a 4 cylinder of the same model with less miles? |

From your description it sounds like your transmission is probably toast. They can fail quite rapidly. If you haven't searched already (& you should have) there is a lot of information about the problem. Here's a thread with a lot of information. Also the service bulletin about the problem. Good luck - I hope I'm wrong.

If Volvo tells you the trans is okay bring it to a Honda dealer ASAP. The Volvo dealer's incentive is to NOT find a problem and avoid a $2,000+ trans replacement. If the Honda tech finds a problem have them document it and bring it to Volvo.

You might also want to go to the Honda owner link web page and see if your car was taken in for the recall. My wife's 03 V6 trans blew this summer at 62,000 miles and the dealer quoted us $1300 for a new (rebuilt) transmission. I'm sure the price varies. Fortunately, they gave us a free courtesy or goodwill repair after further discussion. If it turns out that your transmission is actually ok, you should follow the owner's manual procedure for the drain and fill as soon as possible.

Ok, so I called the dealership they are going to look at the tranny on Tuesday and give me a loaner car. I also called Honda and they have the recall for the tranny listed as closed for my VIN. The rep I spoke to said that the car was inspected when the recall was originally issued, they found that 2nd was fine and that an oil jet was installed to cool and lubricate the 2nd gear. I will be taking the recall notice with me to the Volvo dealership and if they don't find anything wrong I will have them note why I brought it in. If it happens again I will take it to a Honda dealership and have them look at it. Thanks for the input on this so far.

he he i love that failure of an oil jet. I wonder what bonehead came up with that, I can see them smoking some good stuff then saying hey how about we just put apart in to pump oil on the gear that would fix it right. utter failure definately want a rebuild tranny, then you can drop z1 put in a synthetic atf like d4, magnefine filter and an auxilary tran cooler.

But I would warn the OP to be cautious. My wife 1st realized there was a problem when the trans locked up at about 35 mph bringing her to a sudden unexpected stop. She was nearly rear ended since she stopped suddenly in an odd manner without any brake lights. When I asked if the trans had acted up previously she noted that it had shifted oddly 1 or 2 times previously the same week. I tested the car the next day and it was almost normal. I took it out briefly again the next day and it nearly locked up again. It seemed to drop down about 2 gears briefly locking the tires for no reason. It clearly wasn't safe to drive. Be careful out there!

Well in that case, I would make sure not to go over that mileage and keep bringing it in until they take some action...

Thankfully you have the warranty. They need to do long test drives so they can experience the slipping transmission. It is random. Since it is slipping, it will get worse and that is the beginning of the internal failure. Is the warranty through Volvo, or a third party company? If third party, then take it to Honda, tell them you have the extended warranty, and allow them to do long test drives to confirm the transmission is slipping.
Mine had to go in 3 times, then the 3rd time I went on vacation and let Honda keep the car for the week. They did a long drive and once it slipped on them, they did a goodwill repair because my '03 only had 52,000 miles when it started slipping in Spring/Summer 2008. |
