I was shock when I checked my engine oil after washing my car this afternoon. The oil level is way below the lower mark (It is about half way between the lower mark and the end of the dipstick). I tried to check the oil level several times but the results came out the same :( (I did insert the dipstick all the way back into its hole)
Is my engine burning oil? And what should I do now? Bring it to the dealer and have them check it out tomorrow? Or change my oil? Or just add some more oil and wait until the MM Service comes on?
Right now my MM shows the oil life is 40% at 4800 miles. I haven't done anything since I bought my car in August 09, and I think the sticker on my car show that it was made some time in the end of 2008.
Any advice from you guy would highly appreciated :notworthy:notworthy

Do you change your oil yourself? If not maybe the car did not come with the right amount of oil.

No. This is still the original oil that came with the car. I remember last time when I checked it (about one and half month ago), it was full. (But that time, I just pull the dipstick out and checked the oil level, did not clean the dipstick end and re-check it). So I don't know I was really full that time :dunno:

curlyhair, hello from Redmond. How many miles do you have on your ride? Regards

And one more thing I noticed from my car is when it is cold outside, there is a lot of white smoke come out the end pipe even after the car reaches its normal temperature (even after driving for miles). Is that normal?

Was your car off for at least 10 minutes and on level ground?

I parked my car for more than 5 hours before I checked the oil level. (It is level)

There are several threads about this issue. My car burns oil as well. I think it burns 1qt every 1k miles. My car has 63k and it still burns oil. I just make sure to check it every week.

So what do you guys think what I should do now? Add some more oil or bring it to the dealer?

Just add a qt. You'll be fine. Just make sure its 5/20. Any brand will do.

Thanks. I will buy a quart of 5-20 Honda oil to put in my engine tomorrow. But do you think is it normal? Should I talk to my dealer about it?

Its normal. I already talked to my service advisor and he said that its normal. I've learned to accept it. I'd rather spend the 2 to 3 dollars on a qt of oil that have my engine go out....

i change my oil every 5k max, I use mobil 1 synthetic, cheap peace of mind. There is always some left over so i keep that on hand in case i have to top her off, walmart is your best friend well sometimes :) .

If you haven't changed the oil in over a year (which would be the case if it was made late last year) then you are probably due for a change. Make sure to always wipe off the dipstick, then re-insert to get a proper reading on oil level.

Good luck!

Complacency

I cant understand how some posters on here just brush off the fact that our brand new cars are burning oil. My I4 does the same- 1/2 qt only after 1,000 miles or so."its normal" says Honda."just add oil and its done says a poster", WTH?

I've had so many issues with this car-I cant wait till I trade it in- most likely for a Hyundai or Lexus. I feel as if I own a car with 100,000 miles already-new brakes, battery, remote that doesnt work, sqeeking self locking system, now burning oil !!

Yeah its the "normal" operation of a defective design-tell that to ya dealer.

Bye Honda

its not complacency its the simple fact that every car burns oil, only the ratio of how much it burns is different. So your new car will burn oil at a diff rate, but still it will burn its a machine that requires lubrication after all. :)

I just talk to a service advisor this afternoon and he said it is normal, he had deal with several V6's that have the same problem. So he told me to just put 1/2 qt of oil and I did.
Maybe I will change my oil in the next 1 or 2 week (properly at 5k miles) with M1 and M1 oil filter. Is the very first service is just changing oil or is there anything else that I need to do?
I am planning DIY because my dealer charges $78 for an oil change with M1 while Walmart sells 5qt M1 for $22 and I think the M1 oil filter is around $10.
However, I have never changed oil of a car before, but I think it is not very complicated and I can do it.
What do you guys think? Should I DIY or bring it to a local shop or to the dealer for the 1st time? If I DIY, I just need to write in the Service History and keep the receipt of the oil and the filter right?
Thanks you guys very much for helping me.

or to save the dealership warranty bs, take it to a shop and pay someone 15 bucks to change it that way they can't say you screwed up. But if you are not in a blizzard diy works. :)
