Starting Problems
Well its getting colder and colder up here in Canada
I've had the accord for about 3 months now and i found that today in the morning it would start untill the 4th try!!! if its been sitting for just a while say over an hour it will take maybe 2 tries! The first few attempts it seems like the battery is struggling as the lights and radio flicker a bit but then finally starts Should this really be happening on a brand new accord?, should i get it checked at the dealer?, it is kind of frustrating since even the 94 cutlass supreme can still start on the first crank in the coldest of days, so what do you guys/girls recommend i do?

Batteries work very poorly in cold and hot weather. If any thing you may need a battery with a higher CCA or cold crank amp

Something to take in consideration is maybe to upgrade your I4 battery to the bigger v6 battery. Other things you could do is get a battery warmer (similar to a block heater), or to overall upgrade your battery. When searching for a new battery (dont skimp on it and get an everstart or something) look for OE or Optima and look for the 08+ accord but v6 in specs rather than the I4. I'd suggest a block heater but that could possibily mean that you'll have an ugly plug sticking out of your grill or hood or whereever you put it.

This would be my first thought. My battery is only 400 or 500 CCA in my Accord. My 97 Chrysler Concorde had an 850CCA which was great in these Iowa winters!

I4 starters **** to begin with, and a weak battery in freezing temperatures doesn't help either. So yes, a bigger battery would be nice, but this simple tip might be enough for you: Let the ECU do its diagnostics (and the fuel pump prime) before you start cranking. Honda/Acuras are especially slow to recognize the key, so if you start cranking right after you insert the key, you'd be wasting 2 or 3 seconds of your starter and battery EVERY time you use the car.
Finally, if you don't use the car daily for at least 15 miles, you need to charge your battery regularly as well man, especially in winter. I'd try those 2 things before anchoring even more weight on your car with a heavier/larger battery. Hope this helps. |

Optima 35 battery
I switched to an Optima 35 battery before the D-cell battery honda puts in gave me any trouble. The optima really turns her over good even in the 15 degree F nights. The other thing that would help is changing the oil to a 0W-20, I used Mobil 1. Amazon has the batteries for $144, but shop around on the net and you can find one cheaper.
