Yes it has overdrive in the regular D position
(called D5 cos it has 5 gears - there is no D4 - in D3 OD is off)

Not having a D4 position on the shift-gate ticks me off. Not having SportShift ticks me off even more. The $18k Fit Sport has it, why can't the Accord?

You would think the Accord would get some of those niceties. But IMO, it's too big to really be considered sporty and I'm sure Honda thinks the older demographic would not appreciate those features. Probably the same reason you can't get an EX-L with a 5MT anymore Apparently if you want a 2.4L, 5MT, and NAVI, u're screwed.

In regards to the transmission question, typically Honda ATs work something like this:

D1: Holds 1st
D2: Skips 1st, starts in 2nd (good for starting from a stand still on slippery surfaces)
D3: 1 - 2 - 3 but will not engage 4 or 5 (supposed to be used when in hilly area)
D4/D5: normal driving. OD kicks in on the highest gear available.

I am so jealous..envious may be the right word..I need those on my Coupe..
Two questions though, i) how's the shifting with the paddles? I test drove a Civic, and it seemed to miss a few times especially on down shifts.
ii) How's the 'pause' between paddle click and gear shift - and I'm not expecting you to say it shifts as quick as a Ferrari or something - but still, any lags there?

^ That sounds right on the money, Trip!

we dont get the coupe though! But couldn't you just manually shift through the gears to get the same experience? I havn't noticed any missed shifts and it seems to respond pretty quickly.

Ok, then I'm a bit less envious (since you don't have the coupe) he he

Noted about the response to the paddle shifts, guess there are better quality components in the Accord as compared to the Civic.

Yeah I do occasionally manually shift just to get a kick out of it, but still, that don't beat the real thing..

To answer your question technically, I'm sure 5th is an overdrive gear (numerical ratio less than 1), but it's a lot higher than previous generations due to VCM. In other words, rpm in top gear is (a lot) higher than Gen7, for instance.

As far as having an 'OD' button, no such thing on Hondas. They skip from 5th to 3rd, either by a button (CR-Vs, etc), or manually (Accords, etc).
