Auto Transmission Mis-Shift. Not So Good Noises

So I was on my way home tonight and I slowed down pretty fast to make a turn and my car downshifted to the wrong gear (its automatic), rpm's jumped up, and there was 2 or 3 really loud 'thuds' from the car. After it happened, I drove really slow through the gears and the transmission doesn't seem to be slipping or anything but when the rpms get higher there's a click noise like something is bouncing around somewhere. I opened the hood when I got home and it seemed that the engine was clicking louder than normal. It was louder than it is on a cold start except the engine was fully warmed up. I'm gonna look more closely and everything tomorrow when its daytime and I can see. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be, or what I should look for?

Sounds like a question for Fredsvt. Either your vehicle jumped timing or something in your Cylinder head broke. How many miles?

UPDATE (unfortunately). Transmission's shot. I got it checked out and the final drive of the transmission is messed up and they said I'd have to have it rebuilt. $2,000+

FYI. Ericthecarguy has a website and took apart an Oddesy Transmission to fix his slipping gear. I understand your problem is vastly different but if you're going to tackle the job yourself you may want to take a look at it. Search Ericthecarguy on google and find the video.

@Pants

Could you share with us the service history: which ATF and was it changed?

Thanks.

The car was my dads car before I got it so I don't know specifically when he took it in I just know whenever the dealer says the recommended maintenance is due he brought it. He doesn't do anything diy but he does keep up with maintenance so I'm sure whatever was in the manual is when he did it. I started doing all the maintenance myself at about 80k (now 100k miles) but I never needed to do the transission cause I had a free warranty check up before my 100k mile warranty was up and i had the dealer do it while it was there so whatver the dealer uses is what was used. Sorry that doesn't help much tranny fluid is one thing I haven't had to do myself yet. But after this I will definitely try and do it earlier than the manual recommends when I get my car back from the shop, and id suggest the same to anyone else. Better safe than sorry

If your model has an in-line filter for the atf, on the line which routes atf to the atf cooler at the radiator, consider replacing that filter now too. Honda does not spec a service life on the filter, but since you are replacing the transmission ...

ATF drain and fill is easy. Check out the youtube videos. The most difficult part is checking the level with the dipstick.

Since all the atf cannot be drained at once, many DIY'ers do four successive drain and fills to completely replace the fluid every 30-40K miles.

Good luck.

Hmmm, a 4cyl AT failure. I guess the 4cyls are not exempt.

The OP doesn't really know when or even if the transmission fluid was changed prior to him receiving the car. His Dad followed the owner's manual. The problem with that is Honda doesn't recommend any service on the transmission until 100K. We all know this is too long.

The 4cylinder transmissions are much more reliable than the 6 cylinders.

The transmission in question could have been unintentionally neglected.

Oh Well I figured the manual had it sooner.in that case he did it more because I know it got changed at 98k and at least once before that probably at like 50k. And the fluid was still a good color when it happened so I think it was more a bad luck mechanical issue than inadequate maintenance

No telling what caused your transmission failure.

Last Fall, I traded in a 4 cylinder Accord EX auto with 105K miles because the transmission had started to slip occasionally in colder weather.

This Accord was not driven aggressively, never used to haul anything heavy or used to tow, and lived all of its almost 10 years in the southwest. I changed the ATF as I described in my earlier post at 35, 61, and 92K.
