Upgrade from LX/SE 11.1" rotors to EX 11.8" rotors?
Hello,
I would like to know if all Accords use the same front brake calipers; if so, would it be possible to swap out caliper brackets to upgrade the 11.1" brakes to the (somewhat) larger 11.8" EX brake rotors? Would they still fit under 16" wheels? I did a quick search, but most of the results had to do with the rear brakes and premature wear. Warm Regards, John Bravo |

Check a Honda parts site like College Hills Honda or Bernardi Honda and see if the part #s are the same for the two calipers.
I can tell you that EX front discs and calipers will work with 16" wheels, as I use 16" steelies as my winter wheels. Its a close fit, but they work fine.

I have no real knowledge, but would be willing to bet the calipers are indeed the same, can't really imagine how they would make em any cheaper for the LX. Also shocked to hear they put smaller rotors in the Accord... the brakes kind of **** enough as it is.
Like the above poster said, there's an enormous amount of clearence so 16's wouldn't be an issue.

I have a 2009 Accord Coupe V6, which I assume has the bigger rotors and im currently running 16" wheels for the winter and have no issues. Hope this helps.

you will need whole brake assembly that is used with EX+ , caliper assembly , pads and rotors .
Might be best to get parts off new model in junkyard ,except pads and rotors . You can get them retail for about 125 or Remanufactured for 100 from Honda , thats not to bad . http://www.hondapartsdeals.com/hpa_p...nGroupID=16222

As long as you are swapping out your 11.1 calipers and rotors for the 11.8 caliper and rotor off an EX, they should fit. The other way this will work is if you get brackets made so your calipers fit over the 11.8.

right, the 11.8 rotors are thicker by 5mm than the 11.1 and it be hard to make bracket for only a 3/8 movement in radial position out .

I love my car- especially the drive train, but the brakes are terrible. To think the LX brakes are even less capable isn't comforting.

AFAIK the LX uses same brakes as gen7 V6 did .
rotor size is not always best indicator of brake performance . On many vehicles simple pad change improves braking performance by large factor . I would look at the width more than diameter .

Thank you all for the input! I do not yet own an Accord; I currently drive a 2001 Ford Taurus, but at 220k miles I am getting a bit nervous about repairs. The Taurus has been an amazing car both in terms of reliability and fun (believe it or not haha!). The engine is original and runs like new...but the transmission is known to be a weakpoint. My transmission is original and that scares me.
I don't look to gain much, if anything, from a rotor swap. The 2000 and older Taurus (non-SHO) came with 10.9" rotors and they could be upgraded to the 11.6" brakes simply by replacing the caliper bracket (easy find in a junkyard...any Taurus 2001+ will have them). I don't believe larger diameter rotors would necessarily improve the braking ability of the car, but I do believe that more massive rotors would tolerate repeated abuse in a much more reliable fashion. I am not a racecar driver, but I like to take my car out for a flogging every now and then. Honestly, I only wanted to know if the swap was as simple as with the Taurus. When I saw 11.1" rotors on the Honda website, my initial impression was that these are severly undersized for a full-size car. I don't recall the width being specified, and I would agree that plays a role in overall braking quality. At the time, it seemed reasonable to believe the 11.8" brakes are more massive than the 11.1" brakes...initial impressions. Once again, thank you all for the discussion I've enjoyed lurking on this site for the past month. My girlfriend has a long history of Honda Accord ownership. Her current ride is a Red 2010 Accord Coupe, 4cyl 5AT. I had never considered the Accord to be an interesting car until I drove hers...my first words were, "it feels like the seat - whole car in fact - is tailored to me!" It only got better as I drove through the countryside around some winding roads. The steering was perfectly weighted, the engine had ample power...I could not express in words the joy I got from her car. Since that time I've been dreaming of owning one ![]() Cheers! |

John B, no Honda does not use the same caliper & bracket for all models. You will need rotors, calipers & brackets, but an easy bolt on.
