Transmission replacement costs.. 05 V6 Auto

Unfortunately I have been told I need a replacement transmission. At the dealer closest to me I have been quoted $4100. They are going to attempt a goodwill case with Honda but who knows what that will lead to.

-What have others been quoted for a dealer replacement?
-Thoughts about a place like Aamco doing it (I have read both positive and negative experiences at least at Aamco places)
-Any other tips? (and as hard as this is.. It probably still is a good idea to do it since everything else is in good shape)

My 05 v6 has 90K miles and the fluid was just replaced by dealer a couple of months ago. Delay from park>drive started before that, noises later. Not a cappy camper.

If I end up going the first route obviously I can get quotes from other dealers.

Thanks!

Do you happen to know any mechanics?
I think the cheapest way to get a new transmission is to make friends with tuners that do engine swaps and buy a tranny on ebay or carparts for (around 1000$) and do it that way somehow. But its a lot of hassle. sorry to hear that man I know the feeling, wish you luck!

All dealers will be around the same price on the replacement. You can go the cheaper route and have it rebuilt.

Rebuilt will run you around $2000. You might get lucky with the goodwill. The may split the cost in half or cover the labor.

Quoted me $4200 for the transmission repalcement on my 03 Accord V6 with 117k miles. V6 transmission failures are common in 7th generation accords I have quickly learned. Details of my situation are in the following post, good luck. My new tranny has 36k & 3 year warranty and has been running perfectly. Dealers have gotten very good at performing this repair.

Looks like 90k, little less than mine

How long did these problems take to show up before it failed?

I suppose I can bring it back home and try some drain/refills, replace with better fluid, replace the transmission filter (which hasn't been done yet but I'm reading all about it now) and maybe replace the pressure switches.

I just had mine rebuilt in February for $3700. My transmission had 223k miles when the 2-3 started slipping. I would recommend against doing the fluid and filter now because when mine started slipping I did that. It worked for a short time and then suddenly everything got worse quickly. I believe that had I done nothing it would have progressed more slowly. That $3700 did include some front sub-frame bushings and my TL-S front and rear sway bars.

Good luck. Whatever route you go, a rebuild would be the right way if it's needed. Would need more details to diagnose the problem, but if you've had it looked at then you most likely will need the extra work. And if you've already drain and filled the fluid than that might not be the issue.

You may be able to find a reputable rebuild for cheaper though.

Don't go to Cottman Transmission if you have those in your area. I took a ford taurus there and 1 month out of warranty on the transmission I paid 4000 for a part they replaced (the pump shaft) broke.

If you can find anyone who will offer a decent warranty like the 36k miles 3 year above then it may be worth the extra thousand or so from finding a small shop or mechanically inclined friend. Especially if you are replacing with OEM parts. If it broke once, it could break again

The goodwill request worked. Honda is picking up 50% of the "warranty price" so my total comes to $1724. It probably helps my family has had 4 Hondas total.

Obviously, still not thrilled about it failing at all, but that's a lot better than thinking about $4100, a "new" used car, or a new car.

Comes with 3yr/36k warranty
