Cool 9500ix Radar Detector Custom Install w/smart cord

I got tired of the coil cord in my view so I chose to mount the control unit in the cubby below the cd changer so I could close the door and retain the factory look. I had been racking my head the past week on how to do everything and think about future scenarios. I wanted to buy the Blendmount and hang it from the rear-view mirror but the fact that an officer could see it would mean I would have to remove it while getting pulled over. I also live on a military base and hate taking it down every time I pull through the gate (Gate guard tells me to take it down every time cause they are illegal on base).

Mounting it high I found to best fit my needs. I won't pick up laser if any up that high but I feel that if I ever saw laser anyway, I would start looking for a good spot to pull over... With that said, the detector will pick up radar signals better up higher so it was a done deal for me. The officer shouldn't be able to see it unless he is sticking his head in my car and looking up at the ceiling. I chose to put it behind the factory blue tint strip on the windshield because I can conceal it almost to not seeing it at all from the outside. (I'm not worried about not picking up any signals up there and behind the strip. I picked up a very strong KA band this morning heading down to the tint shop and gave me a nice 1+ mile notice).

I also put a hidden kill switch for the whole detector setup to keep it from chirping when I don't want it to like pulling through the gate on base and a cop coming up to my car lol.

Lol...
All that above should answer most of the questions toward my decisions.....

Now onto the pics and install. This took me about 2 hours to complete total thanks to the following write-ups from fellow forum members:

Take apart the center console - http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/sh...t=16709&page=6

Running the Escort Smart Cord wire - http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/sh...radar+detector

Recent Thread with Smart Cord Install - http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=71073

Using the first thread, I removed the center console in about 1 minute and removed the 4 screws holding the cubby in. Pulled straight out and I dremmeled a notch on the top of it to secure the wires coming out of it.

Blurry picture of the notch:

Thought I was going to have to drill a hole out of the back of the cubby for the wire and was pleasantly surprised to see this big ass opening when the door to it is closed:

Got this sticky ass 3M foam tape and stuck it to the control unit:

Took a sharpy and colored the side the tape cause it was gray.

After a few minutes of playing around where to put the switch, I ended up sticking it here. (Warning - This shit is sticky as **** and you only have one chance to stick it correct)

Used some industrial velcro from Amazon to help secure the wires permanantly from lifting and sliding around.

Added some electrical tape for insurance

Running the cable toward the fuse box

This is the panel under the steering wheel. That black thing with the button is the button for the KARR factory alarm system that Honda sold me. (Don't buy it). This is where I'm mounting the kill switch for the detector.

I used the second thread at the beginning of my thread to route the phone cable (power wire) to the detector exactly as he did.

Made everything pretty and put it all back together

You can actually see a blue cable hanging below around where your left foot would go. I've since fixed that lol.

Now you see me!

Now you dont!

9500ix mounted (NOTICE the GPS Lock for all you unbelievers):

Kill Switch hidden:

The detector I had before I bought the car. I bought it halfway into a road trip a few months ago for around $500. It came with the coil cord and sufficed for the trip. Just bought this car a couple weeks ago and couldn't use that damn cord again.

Escort Smart Cord (Blue) - $30

Add-A-Fuse (Mini) - $5 (Tapped into an open accessory fuse port)

hmmm... if you have the basic electrical stuff at home like wire connectors and crimpers etc... you'll only need the 2 things above plus a detector.

Oh and the simple (no light) switch - $5

Looks nice. My SmartWire switch is just velcroed to the right of my knee on the lower part of the dash, slightly along the curve. Was thinking of cutting out a space for it on the panel with my VSA and interior illumination switch.

On that note, looks like your interior illumination switch is upside down on your panel.

Ha I think you are right. Honda just did the install on that on Monday.

Just got my windshield tinted with Llumar's AIR Blue 80 yesterday. I'm going out in a little to see if the suction cups stick well or not.

When the radar is that high, doesn't it affect the rear radar? I have the same and love it!

I haven't been able to test it too much in that position. I have had many saves with cops behind me mounting it low so I hope I get similar results with it up there. I'm goign to try and find an alternative mount though before I continue using it. I hate suction cups yet I don't want it hanging from the rear view so I gotta figure this one out. I wish there was a mount that would utilize the visor clip and put the detector forward of the clip... hmmm I see some improvising coming soon if I can't find something to buy. lol

The suction cups that come with the detector wears out after a while or if its really hot.

I got this a few months back:
Amazon Amazon

Very secure mounting to the windshield (I even have some trouble getting it off once I release the latch!) It also brings the detector forward of the clip as well, but I may be interpreting what you mean the wrong way.

Great write up BTW!

Thanks!!

That's the super up. I heard a lot of bad reviews on it so I never picked it up. My blend mount is out for delivery today so I'll put that up after work.

If you are talking about the thing with the blue lights on it in the following pic, that is one of the lights from the "Ambient Light Illumination Kit" for our Accords. It's washed out from the camera's flash.

The button next to the VSA button on the left side of this pic is the button for the ambient light kit. It's mounted upside down technically so I gotta pull it out and flip it.

Got the blendmount installed. I actually kinda like it. I can't find my camera cord so I'll have to get pics uploaded later. I might re-take them on the new DSLR anyway.

Agreed the Blendmount is well worth it. Makes the install so much cleaner.
