09 LX - Possible Blow By?

Hello everybody,

A week and a half ago, I bought an 09 MT LX with 23k on the clock.

Today I had the hood open and was listening around the engine just observing. I removed the oil cap and was surprised to hear a lot of air coming out of the oil fill. I put my hand over it and felt the pressure. I also noticed that the engine seemed to bog down when the cap was off - returning to normal when it was put back on. My hand was also a bit oily from just putting it over.

So I'm coming here asking you all if this is normal or would my first guess have it right as this being some excessive blow by? I'm tempted to take it back to the Honda dealer and have them give their two cents.

I know that these other vehicles weren't DOHC or Honda's for that matter, but my 07 Impala, 07 Taurus or 94 Buick (with 213k) didn't seem to exhibit this same issue.

Thanks.

I seriously doubt a Honda engine with 23k is getting blow by. At 187k I still don't use oil and I don't drive like grandma either. If you run an engine without the cap, of course oil is going to go everywhere. Some engine covers may be baffled in such a way that you could do that I think that uncapping the crankcase system is going to change the pressure in a way that Honda did not intend.

It's normal. The cap is threaded to keep pressure and oil in.

If you're concerned about something, try getting a replacement oil cap. Sounds like normal engine behavior, but maybe the cap is leaky.
