8th Gen value when the 9th Gen is released

With the upcoming release of the newly designed 2013 Accord, how much value do you think the 8th generations will lose?

I haven't done any analysis of the prior effects of redesigns, but just wanted to know what everyone thinks.

I'm honestly not sure. I think there will be a small drop but the 8th gen is still a desirable car. Many people want to forgo the depreciation of a new vehicle and buy cars 2-3 years old so I think there will still be demand for a used 8th gen.

8th Gen will not loose any value (meaning it will loose as normal) with the 9th gen coming out because...

1. Some will be turned off by CVT. I am one, even thou I read good things about the current all-new Nissan/Jatco CVT that Honda will use. I would buy it for the wife, but I still perfer the clunky Honda AT. So if you want the size, 8G is the only way to go.

2. 8G was produced during the worst automotive sales in modern history. Without looking at the sales numbers, Accords normally sold 400,000 units a year. 8G sales are at the 250,000 range. That's not because the 8G suc ks, we can blame Bush or Obama. Your call. There are very little good used cars to choose from. The gap between old junk and "new" is much greater now. So the demand of 8G used Accords will (still) be high.

Depends if the 9th gen is a failure or not.. Just look at what the 2012 Civic did to boost the resale value of the 2011 Civic.

None.

If you're looking for a similar comparison, consider the current CR-V. It's selling in record numbers, often for top dollar. As a result, clean, straight, low-mileage one-owner CR-Vs are also selling for premium prices to those who cannot afford a new one. This, by the way, is one of the reasons that Honda doesn't sell Accords, Civics or CR-V to fleet buyers: doing so always negatively affects the value of the products sold to retail consumers. So you can thank Honda for its overall marketing strategy. There's also the fact that sales of the current generation Accord have been up significantly for the last several months. This, too, works in favor of current owners. Of course, general market trends will do little, if anything, to increase the value of a dirty, dented, high-mileage LX lacking a documented service history, but there's nothing usual about that.

I think Honda (in general) keeps its value better than most other cars. Actually i agree with the reasons notes so far. There are many factors, like the CVT trans, 9th gen being first year in production and sales numbers will actually keep the 8th gen prices in good standing. of course eventually prices do go down do to vehicle age and condition but i think with the accord it will be nothing out of the norm.

i'm not so sure about the resale. i was looking at upgrading my 2011 exl V6 with 11K miles in perfect condition. i was offered $19K for a trade. Window sticker was $30K brand new. Not great.

actually that is correct, that is the trade in value which at least 30% less than what you can sell it for by yourself. the dealership will need to spend some money on your car and make money on it as well when they take it in as a trade. so they need to offer low to be able to sell high.

Resale value No! but if you are going to get brand new one then you can expect the dealer to lower the prices.
