Gas with Ethanol and my MPG
So pretty much all regular gas has 10% ethanol in it these days, or at least "up to 10%" it says on the pumps. So one local gas station by me has ethanol free gas (100% gas, 0% ethanol) so I thought I would try a tank of it to see if my MPG changes at all. They only offer ethanol free in premium grade, 91 octane rating. Regular gas was $3.40 and the premium ethanol free was $4.05 a gallon. I filled up Monday morning (took 16.5 gallons). My regular MPG for just going to and from work averaged 30.5mpg last tank and all summer has been between 30-32mpg for the whole tank. So far (~100 or so miles into this tank) I'm averaging 35.5mpg with the usual to and from work commute. So I wont make any conclusions until the tank is empty, but so far looks like a solid 4-5mpg gain! I also figured out that a 5mpg gain would be needed to offset the extra cost of it.

Yes per the EPA numbers - 23 City 34 Highway 27 Combined
My commute is mostly rural (50mph with a few stops/lights) roads with a 2 mile highway stretch. My main point here is the difference in normal (all summer) 10% ethanol tanks and this tank without any ethanol. I will post my final results once the tank is empty and keep using the ethanol free gas for a while and hopefully get a highway mpg number also.

It is true that while ethanol can have nice octane numbers, it is lower in actual useable "fuel" compared to petrol gasoline. I HATE that there are no 100% stations within 100 miles of me!

100% gasoline has 125,000 BTU/gallon, 90% gas and 10% ethanol mix has 120,000 BTU/gallon. This means you get 4% less energy on every gallon of ethanol and your gas mileage will be reduced by about the same amount. The increased octane number is a plus tho.

from a cost/benefit analysis, then, you are gaining nothing by using 100%
