question about ebay OEM style headlights.

hi guys,
im thinking about buying a pair of OEM style headlights off ebay to do a retrofit with MH1. has anyone experienced with those headlights could give me an advice. Should i buy these for retrofit or buy a pair of used OEM headlights?

I got a set of Spec-D tuning headlights off ebay because they were the cheapest and they worked fine for my retrofit.

the reason i asked was because some pp said ebay headlights have terrible light pattern. im totally noob so i dont know if it has something to do with the projector.

OEM and aftermarket both have terrible light output. If you are looking at buying already retrofitted aftermarket headlights (ie: ones with LED strips or angle eyes) then yes chances are the projectors will be garbage. But if you are looking at buying regular replica halogen headlights and dropping a projector in then it should look fine.

Thannk you so much, and one more thing. Does the MH1 fit the aftermarket headlights just like it does on the OEM? I mean with no cutting, no modification....

Mine fit fine. I actually noticed too that the aftermarket ones had plastic rings around where the bulbs go in (you just discard the ones for the low beams) but it allowed for my highbeam/DRL bulb to just twist and lock in instead of the set up my OEM one where the bulb was held in with screws. If you're really brave you could look into using better projectors though, the MH1's arnt bad, but there are better out there. The better ones (TSX, FX/FX-R, TL ect, even the Morimoto Mini DS2) will require you to cut the housing though. I am actually considering retroing my OEM headlights now with better projectors. Not that the MH1's are bad or anything, I just have different ideas for the headlights themselves. Just something to consider.

thank you so much for all the info. i haven't done any retro before that why the MH1 is like the easiest one that i could do. Could you pls upload some pics that have the light output at nite? i've seen it on youtube but it just wasnt clear enough

Here are some output shots:

One thing to note, it looks brighter in pictures then it does in real life. It looks bright in real life, especially on roads without street lights, but the beams can look less intense when you have street lights.

Why not just use the housings you have?

Also, from all the research I did, the H1 mini outperforms the DS2 mini.

The H1 does out perform the DS2 in terms of beam with and probably throw, but the DS2 will allow you to use OEM bulbs like Phillips and Osram. Brighter output is better than slightly less beam width, IMO.

these pics look awesome. thank you very much just wish the output was the same in real life but i would be more than happy if the light is this bright. i have a PnP HID kit and hate it when it has too much glare

That's why TRS sells a 55w H1 now.

If I had the money to throw away, I'd definitely go that route.

A proper retro, Morimoto or better will not compair at all to a PnP kit. I took before pictures and current pictures (that I would upload but I dont have time before work) and the output is a lot better. One thing to note with a retro: It wont look as bright in certain places then a PnP kit. When I say this I mean that things like road signs will not be as bright only because you wont have the excessive glare from a retro that you had with the PnP.

From what I hear, Morimoto makes a pretty good bulb when compairing it to some of the other aftermarket bulbs (Xentec, DDM, ect) however unfortunately these dont compair to OEM manufacturers. The only downfall with the H1 is that OEM manufacturers dont make H1 HID bulbs, as the H1 wasnt suppose to be used for headlights (I believe it was only intended to be used for fog lights). One other thing to note, I am running 55w ballasts in my MH1 retro, but I don't suggest this. So far I dont have issues, but alot of people on HIDplanet suggest that 55w ballasts could burn the reflector bowls inside the projector, causing weaker output.
