New Car time.
Just signed up on Drive Accord. Look here all the time but never post and I need some help.
Right now i'm currently driving a 1994 Accord LX 5 Speed have had all Hondas in the family except when I got an Escape V6 that I didnt keep very long The Accord I have now is getting to the point where I have to keep putting more money into it and Ive decided that its not worth anymore time or money. I have looked at every Honda possible in the lineup and still cant decide what I want. Right now im down to two 2012 Civic EX-L with Navi or 2013 Accord EX-L without navi. I know what one I will like better but the amount of money is hanging over my head. I drive alot for my job and MPG is a big key. What do you guys think? Should I spend the extra money to get the Accord or stay in the civic line and save some cash?? |

Have you driven the 2012 Civic yet? If so, do you like it? Personally, I never really checked it out, but it was deemed a design failure on many levels.

If you drive a lot of miles, I think the Accord is the better asphalt eater. It will definitely be quieter and probably more comfortable. You should also consider total cost of ownership. A number of sites such as KBB and Edmunds have true cost to own calculations. You may be surprised to find the Accord is cheaper over five years. In your case, I'd discount depreciation since it looks like you drive your cars into the ground. Good move.
I had a 94 LX 5 spd with ABS and absolutely love that car. Haven't had it for nine years and I still miss it. Hit 285k with it and it rusted out before it wore out. FWIW, you may want to look at the new Fusion and the new Passat. I rode in a rental Passat this week and was very impressed with fit/finish as well as near silence on a well-worn concrete road. Compared to Honda, reliability may be an issue with both, and durability with the Ford, but I will check them out in more detail when I'm in the market.

I haven't driven the 2012 Civic yet. But if the ride/handling is similar between the two gen, here are my .02... My sister has '11 Civic LX-S and I've driven her car on multiple occassions, and let me tell you, both the ride and handling in the Accord are without a doubt superior to the Civic. The one thing the Civic has significant advantage over the Accord is its fuel economy. I usally get 25-26 combined and have gotten 30+ combined with more highway driving (75-80% hwy). My sister easily gets 30 combined and has gotten close to 40 mpg on a pure highway trip. I've never done a pure hwy trip with my Accord, but I suspect I'd not have any trouble getting close to 35 if I drive conciously. Also, have you driven either of the two cars? I took drove the '13 Accord and was really impressed with the car (although I did not like the CVT). I definitely recommend taking both cars on a test drive and go from there.

I have test drove the 2012 Civic but not the Accord. I can tell though the road noise is way more in the civic than the accord. I've also looked into the Jetta and Passat TDI models. I loved both of them but I was steered away with the issues that a few people I know have had with their VW's.
I guess the big thing that it comes down to is price. My next car is going to have leather so thats where that big payment comes in since all the dealers in my area are so hard to work with. If I could find a decent dealer I would get the Accord. |

So buy a nice used 7th gen set up the way you want, save your money and come back for a 9th gen around mid-model change. Honda's don't depreciate all that rapidly, so the high miles may not hurt you all that much. Eat the elephant a bite at a time.
Again, I only rode in the Passat, but great seats and a huge trunk. I know a CC owner who is very happy. BUt I'm with OP - the only way I would get into a VDub is if they threw in an extended warranty with guaranteed loaner, and even then . . . .

Easy choice, the Accord. Just buy it and don't look back. The 2012 Civic has been criticized thoroughly by many and praised by few.

I agree with all about getting the accord over the civic. I had a 2011 civic EX as a rental and my 7th gen accord drive worlds better than that thing. I did get 35.x mpg's with it, but I'd rather have my 7th gen.
FWIW with my 7th gen 4 cylinder the lowest mpg's I've seen on the interstate is 30.x and as high as 33.x with the cruise set at 75 or 80. I drive over 2000 miles a month so mpg's is important to me, too. I've considered the passat tdi since motor trend named the passat COTY. Even with diesel costing more the dino fuel, I would save $50 a month on fuel costs. VW's (and almost any german car for that matter) reliability issues make me hesitant to buy. It'll be four years though before I'll be "ready" to get something else, if then. My 6th gen had 219,968 miles on it when I traded it in. I expect to have my 7th gen that long and longer. It's at 122,xxx now.

The only civic Id take is the SI... Its barely a good car. I was originally going to get a civic si but I wanted to wait for the 2013 to come out because they said they're going to be a lot of improvements on the car. So far they only said small interior and exterior changes. Rumors of back up camera.

Why does such a small car as a civic need a back up camera? Goodness, its not a hummer.
