iPod in the 2013

This may be a tad off topic but...

I'm thinking that instead of paying for xm radio I can invest in an iPod classic (160 gig) and load it up with music and leave it in the car all the time. I'm curious if being in the car (hot/cold conditions - getting bounced around from time to time) would be bad for the iPod. Specifically for the classic as it has a hard drive in it as opposed to flash memory.

I do like the fact that I can leave it plugged in all the time and keep it hidden away - so I would hope that security wouldn't be an issue. Frankly it's kind of a pain to carry my current ipod from work to the car back to the office back to the car etc. I know that's a first world problem but it would be nice to have a dedicated jukebox in the car.

Anyone doing this now?

This shouldn't be an issue. Those things are pretty darn durable. I use my iPhone in my 8th Gen so I have to take it when I leave as I like to still take txts, emails and calls. :P Or you could always buy a 1 TB portable HDD and format it so that it works like a LARGE USB. You can still go through songs as you would an iPod, only thing is there are no playlists, but I hardly use that feature myself.

I use playlists quite a bit - plus I like the shuffle feature.

It would be interesting to hear if anyone does build a 1 or 2 tb usb music server.

I had an iPod 5.5G 80GB model in a car for 6 years 24/7 before the HD finally died. I've replaced it with an iPod Class 160GB, and I'm hoping it should last as long as well.

I used an older iPod (iPod Photo, I believe) with my USA SPEC unit in my 2007 Accord for a couple years. I left in in the car permanently, and it worked out really well. It was in the glove box. I don't do that anymore because now I have an iPhone and use it in the car.

I always wondered if a external drive can be used, what format type do you have to do to make that work? Can't think of it at the top of my head

I'm have an 8 GB thumb drive loaded with music in my 2013 and I have to say it is kind of painful to use. The system just lists each album in the order it's found in the drive, and it takes forever to scroll through the list of albums. There's no way to search or jump through the list faster as far as I can tell. I don't have Navi though, so perhaps the song by voice thing would help. But I don't think there is enough time in the day to scroll through a 1 TB drive in the Accord.

I've also plugged in an 8 GB iPod Nano to test the connectivity. It works, but it suffers from the same issue: it takes a long time to scroll through lists. But you at least have the other categories (songs, artists, etc.) to scroll through, and of course playlists. I haven't spent a lot of time trying it out though.

If you've already tested out your iPod in the car, great. But if you haven't, I'd give it a spin before you invest in another iPod. I don't think I'll be using the iPod or thumbdrive much, which is fine for me because I'm set between Pandora, Aha and an MP3 CD.

I have always left the Ipod in the car and have never had an issue during the summer or winter, not being bounced around....I would do it. I think it probably depends on individual iPod construction and any fault that may be inherrent to the individual Ipod.

I spent some time in an LX sedan this weekend and I connected my iPhone with a USB cable. Yes, you can browse the music by artist, album, playlists, etc. But in certain menus, "songs" for example, there does seem to be no way to jump through the list faster and could take FOREVER to get to songs later in the alphabet.

Furthermore, if you plug in via the USB port, you lose control of the iPod or iPhone's music from the mobile device itself. You are forced to use the i-mid system to navigate the content of your device. Of course, one could always connect his iPod via the accessory audio in port and retain full control of the iPod.

I've been using my iPod touch (which is normally for music in the office) and I've only played music from playlists which seems to work great - not much lag time while scrolling through the list.

I picked up an iPod Classic last night and used it this morning - playing songs from a playlist. It's got about 4,000 songs on it so I imagine it would be near impossible to search for a specific song (while driving) but searching for an artist - then the song - may be the way to go there.

I like to play playlists or the Genius Mix so I think this will work great for me.

All you have to do is format the drive so that it uses FAT file format instead of NTFS. This will allow it to function like a USB. Might have to try FAT32, but either should work.

How do you skip back a few measures in a song without going back to the beginning? If you just want to hear the chorus over again or are studying the words how do you repeat just a portion of the song?? I think in previous years it was press and hold the seek of scan button and the song would jump back a few bars....Does anyone know how to do this in the 9th Generation?

I've had my 80 GB iPod video classic in my car for the past 5 yrs, even in AZ heat and temps of up to 160 degrees it still plays fine.

I do have an Alpine HU though, that has the Fullspeed cable that connects directly to it and charges it simultaneously.

I use my 30GB ipod classic (hard drive) in my 8th gen Accord. The thing has seen alot of use and the battery isn't good for much more than 30 minutes on its own anymore, but in the car it's plugged in all the time so that doesn't matter. Works very well!

In canadian winters however the iPod won't start after being out overnight in the cold, it needs to charge for 5 minutes or so before it'll start up.

Can you organize the usb thumbdrive into folders and then see the folders on the screen? this worked well for me in other cars.
