2013 Honda Accord Sedan - FCW

I purchased a 2013 Accord last week. I tested the FCW on highway driving at 70 mph, I got within about 15 feet of vehicles in front of me, no beep or anything. I tried it set on long, normal and short. No response. Is this normal for FCW? This is the first car I have had with FCW. I know not to rely on this but I paid for it and want it to work.

FCW will beep if I come up behind a car stopped at a red light, but only when I am about 10 feet from the car. So I know it can activate.

I just wanted to know if this is how it works, or if maybe something is wrong with mine.

I'd have the dealer look at it. From the Honda website illustration the FCW should signal 2 car lengths. Maybe see if the owners manual mentions anything about troubleshooting or adjusting.

I think it takes into consideration the speed at which you're approaching as well as the distance you are away from what's in front of you.

There is a setting that can be set for sensitivity, it shows in the manual how to set it.

The system also uses speed differential to determine if it should alarm, i.e. if you close slowly it may not go off, however if you close too quickly it will.

i have mine set to long and it goes off lots of times in city driving. mostly when the car ahead is stopped and i'm moving around it or also stopping . i'm thinking of setting it back to normal. i think it mostly depends on closing speed.

Have you tried it on highway? In city with it set on long, it only alarms if I have not hit brakes within 10 feet of stopped car.

I think the FCW is a great feature but so far I am not too impressed. I have mine set on "Long" and it has gone off twice in the city and when I try to make it go off it makes me get to close for comfort to activate on purpose. I can't imagine that at freeway speeds it will be of any value (I hope I'm wrong and I also hope I never find out). I think it uses cameras rather than radar which limits the range even on the so called "long" setting. MB, caddy, 2014 Impala use radar tied in with the adaptive cruise that warns and applies the brakes. I think the Accord system is better than nothing but I don't expect that it is sensitive enough to prevent a crash.

When FCW and LDW have gone off, it is not loud enough and if you have the radio volume on medium to loud don't plan on hearing the alarm.

I have spoken with Honda about a software upgrade to make it louder and perhaps mute the radio. HMC is very receptive to customer input (or they have nice people working the phones to give the illusion of responsiveness)

If your Front Collision Warning (FCW) is not going off, I'd venture to say you aren't that close. I triggered the FCW on a test drive when I was going 80-100mph down the highway. Then on the one I purchased, it is set to "normal" and goes off when I'm going down the highway and the car thinks I'm closing fast on the car in front of me.

My sister lives in Dublin - the next time I'm down to visit her I may pop over to Marysville - I wonder if they do tours of the facility?

Dublin is almost next door to Marysville as you know, well worth a trip if they do tours. I don't know but it would be worth taking my kids there if they do. I have seen the plant from the freeway.

I have a cousin who works in AL building Odys. He was a coal miner and was offered the job when the WV mines were closing. He says best job of his life, loves going to work. It is very hard to get a job at these places but his mining background opend the door. He was told that mining for 25 years proves that he is a hard worker and got him in the door.

I thought I was the only one. I have mine set to "Long".

I find it only works when I'm not trying to get it to work!!

I've tried coming up behind cars and it gets too close for comfort in most cases. But the occasions where I've needed it (adjusting nav).

I think it factors the distance of the car. Whether you are accelerating towards it. Whether you're lightly have your foot on the brake and are aware of the situation.

I have to try more controlled tests but I'd prefer to do so with a pylon than other cars.

i have it on all the time. never went off on the highway. but goes off all the time in boston's city traffic. it was not needed went it went off in the city, but i understand why it went off. for example, i was going around someone who was stopped. we would have hit if i followed a stright path. or car stopped and i was only slowing down. i would stop or go around without the car telling me.

anyway i'm going to change it back to normal.

Not complaining, I'd rather have it than not but more experience is needed to have confidence in the system. So many cars don't have it so we are better off with it than without. I am not sure it is good enough to serve the intended purpose in many situations. I don't think we know. I imagine Honda engineers have field tested it (should have discovered it is not loud enough and it should mute the radio) just as I imagine they field tested the stereo yet many are having re boot issues with it.

I would never "plan" to rely on electronics to save my hyde but I'll take it if they happen to step in and save me from going to the boneyard.

Mine has gone off a couple of times when it thinks I am approaching the vehicle in front of me too fast on the highway or when traffic comes to a more sudden standstill. I am wondering however if it is supposed to go off in bumper to bumper traffic. Sometimes in the morning I am in this situation and have not heard it go off once in that type of traffic. If for example you are at a stop in bumper to bumper and then your foot slowly releases from the brake, almost without any signs of movement, if distracted, will the alarm sound before you "tap" the person in front of you?
