2010 rear brake pad issue

today i brought my car in for a recall update related to fuel/VTC issue. then had a free coupon for brake inspection.

after 35mins.. stealership called me and told me the front brake pad still have 8mm left and the rear only has 2mm, so need to charge me $239 to replace the rear.

my coworker has the same model but in 2008, where there was the rear brake pad settlement that i helped him find info on.

my vin is not listed in that settlement at the time, so i didn't bother with it, nor would i get it.

but now, it seems to be the same issue, since my 2010 LXP only has 21K on there.

am i SOL? or is there a new lawsuit for the rear brake pad that i don't know of? anything i can do or tell the stealership to change it under warranty to the ceramic version?

TIA

I may be wrong but I thought the rear brake class action thing was only for 09's and 08's. I think I spent $239 to replace all 4 brake pads....labor and materials. The mechanic was able to do it pretty fast, maybe 5 minutes per wheel. I said it before but to say again, safety critical stuff like brakes I let a professional work on.

I spoke to my Honda dealership a couple of days ago about this very issue on my 2010 EX. It needed new rear brakes after 24k miles and the dealership confirmed the issue did mostly affect 2008-2009, but some 2010 were included. They also confirmed the Honda replacement pads are a little larger than the original pads. The dealership did this work before I got the car, so I did not have to pay for it (I believe they showed the repair was about $200).

Hopefully, this info is of some help.

I’ve had the same thing here happen with my rear pads. I only had about 26K on my 2010 EX with only 2mm left for wear for the rear pads. Honda claims that some early model 2010s were affected, but the fact remains is that we do not know how many of the crappy pads were left within inventory at that time.

I initially leased my accord and then bought it. Honda completed the certified inspection and everything was documented in great condition, except for the breaks. The service manager came to me with the bad news and quoted me that it would cost about $250-ish. I had to argue with him for about an hour about how I work from home and only drive up the street for beer and the occasional food run. That wear and tear will not kill the rear pads unless I stomp on the brakes while accelerating for the 4 mile round trip. (Also made the counter argument that the front pads were completely fine.) I loved how I brought up the lawsuit and he discounted the new brakes for me by 20 buck. (And claimed that Honda had no responsibility in the matter and was doing me a favor by giving me that much for a discount) I told him no thanks. As soon as I walked out to the service area to get my keys, he kicked the price down to something to the tune of $130. He exclaimed he could not discount it further for the better pads. I took the offer.

Had the work completed and called up Honda directly and made a complaint about the brakes and explained my pleasant experience with the service dept. The claims dept, even though they were really condescending, ended up giving me $70 dealership credit. (After a fight.)

At least that will be good for most of the cost for an alignment when I need one. I cannot wait to deal with the service dept again when I bring up to them that my battery is not worth a crap.... whoo-hoo!

By alignment, do you mean four wheel alignment? I just had my dealership do one and they said it was covered either under the original 3 years/36000 warranty or the certified warranty of 4 years/48000 (I never did get a straight answer). I am just throwing that out there in case any of this may help you get that alignment.

As for the brakes, only time will tell if the "new" and larger rear pads will last longer. Also, the Honda service manager I spoke to said Honda requires the brakes (fronts, rears, or both) to be replaced if they have less than 50% life to qualify for the certification program. To me, it sounds like your dealer should have replaced the rear brakes for $0.00 when he declared it "certified".

On the battery, don't get one from Honda. Just do yourself a favor and buy a new battery from someone that knows something about batteries and will put a warranty behind it. I purchased a battery for my 05 Odyssey years ago from O'Reilly and it came with a 5 year warranty. It was having some issues around 4.5 years and they replaced it (depreciated value, of course, but still...).

wow.. thank you all for the input and the info on the rear pad. maybe i should call up Honda directly to file a complaint.

tmillszero1: you mentioned you called Honda, I'm assuming it's the corporate and not the stealership right? If so, what's the number you called, so I don't have to get routed around like crazy..

right inside your owner's manual.....but I will repeat this for others reading here- why screw around with Honda and dealers to put back in lousy pads???

I'm much rather do it right ONCE and put in a ceramic pad..if this was a $2500 tranny I could see going thru all this crap, but it's a $50 /30 min expense/changeout....

this is like going to a bad restaurant and returning the meal to the kitchen as it tastes bad after fighting with the mgmt for an hour......and the waiter says "fine....I'll get you a new plate of the same stuff from the same pot"....

no thanks...

You're right about replacing with a ceramic pad, hindsight is always 20\20! But at least I would still would call Honda Corp to make a complaint. 25K lifetime pads are not acceptable when you purchase any new car. They should compensate anyone who unknowingly purchased an inadequate product towards the cost of a replacement, regardless if it is classified as a consumable or not. Complaints like these are often audited by corp QA. If there are enough complaints, then a change in the product may eventually prompted and made. (Instead of a class action lawsuit prompting the change.)

and again you are right but I've reached that point in my life that I don't sweat the small stuff - and to get on the phone, be transferred around, get my self all worked up waiting for the call back from the dealer, taking it in to get the 40 check -ain't worth it anymore....we are all at diff levels in our lives...It's not important for me to "win" anymore...and Honda knows they got a problem, paying me $25-30 does not change anything at corporate...
