Exclamation 12 degrees here in NY car almost didnt start !!!

whats up brodas !!!
this morning my car almost didnt start , i felt it was the battery but it did so i went to work
cant help but to do some research on cold weather and batteries , is this normal to car batteries?
also im worried that if tomorrow my car doesnt start i will have to get boost somewhere, my wife told me that we could call honda road assistance for a free jump start but im not sure about that ?
also i have this battery tender that i use for my motorcycle and i was wondering if you guys think i could use this to jump start my honda or should i get a portable battery jump start ?
thanks !

Do you have the super small joke-sized 51R battery? I would recommend upgrading to a bigger battery -- I myself went up to an Interstate Megatron Plus 24F. 800CCA's

Also, do you know if that's the original battery? If so, I'd say its probably had enough. Do a search on here for battery upgrade.

Also on a side note, do you know if you have 0W-20 in your motor ATM? Could help alleviate some of the hard cranking.

Your battery is on its way out.

If you don't get much cold weather, you prolly will do fine for another year.

You can upgrade to a 24F, you'll need a bigger battery box if it don't fit.

We've been able to start -20 degrees no problems... though I have seen batteries fail to start at between 12 and 16 degree weather but do fine 20 and above.

thinner weight oil won't help much, if the battery is on its way.

My Duralast in the sig is pretty stout, should last 7 or more years with our tough northern mid-west weather. Plus it is pro-rate for 8 years.

You have the 51R OEM battery if it looks similar in size to this one. Honestly I have a bigger battery in my '69 John Deere 112 Garden Tractor with a 10HP Kohler 241.

This is my engine bay with a 24F in it. It fits no problem.

You do NOT need a bigger battery box, tray, holder... just remove all of that plastic junk and slap it in. Bend back the tabs on the metal bracket and tighten it down. Honestly it isn't going anywhere. Some say "oh but Honda put this battery in for a reason and weight and size..." I'd rather have 800 CCA than 400ish CCA on a 5 degree winter morning when I want the car to start!

I personally recommend the Interstate Megatron Plus MTP-24F, 800CCA, good warranty and ranked very well with Consumer Reports -- which is tough for Interstate 'cause it seems like CR is always hating on them.

OK, now that's a group 35. Some 4 cyl models get them, and the V6 does too. It probably has in the range of 550 - 600 CCA. Probably the battery has just had it. I would still recommend a group 24F. Remove that plastic cover/ring thing and slap it in and crank it down.

While the group 35 does have more CCA than the 51R, I still think the OEM 35 is crummy for CCA.

###EDIT: Just saw on that label that it says it has 440CCA, wow that STINKS! Other group 35 that I have seen have around 550CCA. Definitely get a group 24F.

The Altima 4 and 6 cyl take a Group 35. Not sure how the battery tray is designed if you could put a bigger battery in it such as a 24F. Perhaps check a Nissan forum?

You are scaring me, Mine looks like the one posted above although it started just fine last night with Temp around 15 deg. Do note that since my car does *not* get used everyday it is much more cold when I start it.

This is my engine bay pic, although my battery does look a bit wider than the pic that you have posted.

No need to worry Technocrat. Looks like you have a big battery in there and not an OEM Honda one. If it was similar in size to the one I posted it'd only fill about half of your battery tray. You're OK.
